Hello everyone. A few weeks ago, I asked a question on the steps of going for grading. I received a lot of feedback which will help. One of the suggestions from a number of members was to post a photo first in that grading is expensive and help from members could save money. This was the coin I had in mind when I wrote. Your suggestions? Thanks, Terry McManus

i am going to take a shot at this and the more seasoned experts will give you the real insight, but...i think I see some surface damage on the obverse that might indicate an attempt at tooling/whizzing the coin. Note the circular marks around the 10:00 to 11:00 stars as well as the other noticeable scratches around the peremeter of the coin.
I think you would wind up with a damaged/details grade on this which would have an adverse affect on the numismatic value especially in a resale scenario.

Coin looks cleaned and has obverse scratches. I think the best they will give you is a details grade.

Very tough to form a conclusive opinion based on the images - a bit small and the color is off - but the coin presented has details no worse than AU and possibly better. Assuming it's AU, a lowball bare minimum estimate in a PCGS slab would be about $500 if a "good" slab and $225+ if a "Details" slab. Those values will rise at a rather rapid rate as the grade goes up.
If those potential values leave you comfortable with the expense of slabbing, submit it. They're not exactly common in Mint State - values for an unmolested coin start at 4 digits - and depending on surfaces I'd probably be running to PCGS if it were mine.

Amida17, I'm new to this. Is that number that a person can look up for a graded coin?

NO just my ANA membership #. There are searchable numbers on NGC and PCGS slabs. ANACS is working on it....

The coin does look cleaned, but it still has eye appeal to me. If it was mine it would go into an airtite and I would keep her. Nice old coin with Unc. deatails. But dont waste you money on getting it graded.

Quote:NO just my ANA membership #. There are searchable numbers on NGC and PCGS slabs. ANACS is working on it.... Near as I can tell, ANACS has it now. I'm not ready to consign this one to the "Details" heap just yet. The images just aren't detailed enough. You may note striations on the reverse periphery, particularly near DST and ERI; these are known artifacts for this mintage and can even extend into the devices.

It is hard to be sure. I would love to see it in bright sunshine. I see what you mean Dave but I have to lean toward details...

What does concern me is what appears to be small scratches top of cap. Can you get a more detailed pic?

Use the "Reply to topic" button at the top....not quick reply.
