Looks like a cent planchet with about 85-90% broadstrike. A definite keeper

I am not 100% on the terms, but I think "broadstrike" is right.

edit - errors I have like that are called "broadstrike off-center" not sure why

Agreed ... this is an off-center strike on a cent planchet.

I am also learning fuzzy ... but to the best of my knowledge the term 'broadstrike' is descriptive of a coin that was struck outside the collar whereby the outside diameter is enabled to expand to whatever size the strike imparts.

This coin appears to have been struck in the collar ... hence off-center is the more appropriate descriptor.

Very nice find if you acquired it from circulation.

Weight? Zincoln or copper?

It is definitely an off centre strike and not a broad strike. A very severe off centre strike indeed! Nice find. Errors so severe are very rare in Australia and demand high prices. I think they are more common in the US but still hard to find. I purchased a group of fifteen misstrikes and broadstrikes on US pennies for about $20 a few months ago. I absolutely love them because I know I could never own Australian coins that misstruck. Well done anyway

Very nice find! It's zinc; I can see some exposed by the strike.

Broadstruck and off-center struck are essentially the same with one major difference. Broadstruck coins are struck on-center and show their entire design. They are struck out of collar and are usually larger than a normal coin because of the lack of a retaining collar. Off-center struck coins are also struck out of collar, so they are technically broadstruck - but we call them off-center struck to note the difference.

so "technically" broadstrike was right, just not commonly used for that. Will file that away for future reference

These things are not very rare. $8 is about the right price from a dealer.

A few years ago, a local Sydney dealer brought back a few hundred of them from a U.S. coin show, for sale in his business, here in Sydney.
