I always follow gold and silver prices, but every once in while I check out some of the other metals. I noticed platinum has went up around $100 in the last 4 days. Is there anyone that collects platinum or someone that can give me some insight on the current rise? Thanks

Platinum is tied too close to the economy because of industrial use. I am avoiding it until I see a "real" economic recovery world wide. Gold is the play for now.

There was a massacre in one of the mines, lots of dead and it was closed. Investors worry... therefore... prices shoot up.

Yes, Pt has had a real surge in the past couple of days. I was wondering what the driving force of that might be. I hadn't read of any strong industrial demand being reported lately.

I don't have any physical Pt but I do own some shares in the PPLT ETF. It's making a very nice move now as well.

IMHO Pt is a better long term (decades) buy than Au.

It has a very long history of being priced above gold, sometimes by a considerable margin.

If you do not have any, a buy in the 1/4 to 1 ounce range is worth consideration, just to diversify your overall bullion investment.

I saw footage of the police machine gunning down all the miners on the news... quite shocking to say the least.

I have another question regarding platinum... it is quite a dull metal really and certainly in the jewellery trade most platinum items are rhodium plated to give them a strong shine. Is that the case with coins? I know more recently they have been impregnating the platinum mix with rhodium so as to avoid the need for plating...again is the the case for coins too?

Good questions, I've been curious about pt as well. Imho, its during times like these when you want to get some. Wish I knew where to get half oz, maple preferably, if it exists. But like previously stated, its something to hold onto for better times to see a price appreciation back up to those $2200/oz levels. Buying now with potential 30+% return per oz is definitely a nice thought.

@Sam... you should be able to find 1/2 oz. Pt Maples at both Provident Metals and at APMEX. Both sell them but they are sometimes out of stock. They almost always have the 1-oz. Maples, though.

David, I've not heard of any rhodium plated platinum coins. That seems to be a strictly jewellery-world practice to increase durability and finish. As you may know, it's used to plate master models - again, for durability.
