So, I am trying to make a decision between buying 6 silver quarters, pre 1965, or buying one silver american eagle. Which do you think will be a better investment 20-30 years down the road?

Thanks for your help!

If I had to choose, I prefer SAEs. But I'd really like to have more junk silver than the few dimes and quarters in my current quiver. Just waiting for 10-12X face before I strike.

buy both. So this time get the quarters, next time get the eagle. Quarters are older and aren't made anymore, silver eagles will always be made

If the coins (choice of six Quarters or one ASE) are the same price, the six Quarters contain 1.085± oz. of silver, versus the ASE's 1.000 oz. ASE's always have a slight premium over melt (unlike the Quarters), but you can sell the Quarters individually. If silver hit $100/oz., you'd have the flexibility of being able to sell the Quarters for $18.xx each, instead of having to sell one ASE for $100+.

I'd go for the ASE. The only junk I'm buying are halves/Morgans.

I agree with DNA. Get the quarters since they have more silver which is what you are buying it for anyway

Well, if the quarters are something like slick Standing Libertys, they may not have more silver than an ASE, which could be long by a few hundredths. So how about this? Just flat out buy what you like better. The "investment" difference is likely to be negligible.

Vending machines don't take ASE so you are less likely someone will accidently spend you silver on a coke. Go with the ASE. :)

Most vending machines don't take silver quarters either. That is how I found my first one in circulation. The machine wouldn't take it.

I like pure silver over 90%. The only 90% I keep is halves. They are the easiest to move over the other stuff. The silver eagles always command a premium so I like them also

That happened to my brother in law, lost his whole stash of silver coins when his kids found them and treated themselves to a day at the video arcade. He should have killed them, but they are still alive lol.

If silver goes past $100/oz., individual junk silver coins will be easier to sell (and demand will jump for Quarters and Dimes). There are already some fractional silver rounds being made (by Northwest Territorial Mint, for one). And this is coming from a guy with a lot of ASE's.

My lucky pocket piece is a 1989 ASE I bought for face value out of a 7-11 cashier's drawer (in 1993). Someone could very well have bought a Big Gulp with it. Never say never!
