1943 Cent

Looks like a filled die but their is somewhat a mark of four.

This is an anomaly known almost exclusively to 1943 cents, and as of yet I don't have an official answer as to what causes it. It would be easy to say it's a filled die, but that's not the case. Almost always it's only the 4 that's affected, and that doesn't match up with the typical characteristics for filled dies - anything can be filled. My best educated guess is that it has something to do with the steel dies minting steel planchets and the similarities in hardness between the two caused very odd die wear that affected this digit more than others. Yup, it's a bit far fetched, but there's not been anything else out there that offers a more logical solution.

Oh...and it's not worth anything extra - too common.
