That is absolutely disgusting. He mutilated a truly valuable note and then tries to stick the cost of the damage HE did on the seller. From reading those forum pages, it appears that he has quite a long history of that sort of behavior too.
What an absolute scumbag.

I'm a bit confused here... I see the ebay listing of the note in a CGA - AU50 holder, along with the notation on the top of the listing that states "This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available."... I then see the note was removed from the holder and poorly trimmed (make that very poorly trimmed), followed by a forum post who I assume was the original seller saying the buyer removed the note, trimmed it down, and in the process tore the note in half and wanted a refund from the transaction... My one question is; How can this seller protect himself from PayPal when he ENDED his ebay listing of this note, as the seller bypassed ebay... From personal negative experience with both ebay & PayPal, I would bet that PayPal would refund the purchase as PayPal protects the buyer, even if they're in the wrong...

I hope everything goes well for the seller. Sad that things happen like this. I always knew that doctoring was happening to coins, but I had never even considered it happening to currency. I believe that paypal protects non personal (gift etc.) transactions, even those not through ebay.

PayPal is not only used for ebay, as stated above, really, nothing to do with ebay at this point.

I agree. If I said what I actually thought I would be banned. ;-)

Yeah, I guess he thought no one would notice the top trimmed. He figured with the faults trimmed off, it was worth more. He is trying to get $6000 for the note, but only paid $2500 for it in the slab. More people have turned up that have had problems with the guy as well. He has a history.

It's just plain terrible to see some "beginner" collector swoop in with his cash to buy an exceedingly rare note and then do the unthinkable! I almost threw up the moment I read this in CT where I'm also a tenured member.

he is no beginner and this is probably not his first note doctoring that he has done, Brian has been around note forums for years and believe it or not does have some knowledge but as you see he is not someone you want to do business with

You have no idea what kind of chemical stuff & materials "Professionals" are using to upgrade notes & even to FOOL 3rd party grading companies! Having said that, I don't trust CGA grading "rare" notes (even new owners) after past scandal!! @ ratio411, Thanks for sharing that with us .... I've blocked the seller in my ebay account Cheers

Why block the seller? The buyer was the problem.
