What is the lowest price one could pick up a type set from 1800 on for US coins? Picking out the coins individually.

Of course I want to get decent quality coins but just looking at an estimated starting price. I can always fill in and then upgrade later.

Quality would be a key decision there. I mean, if you are looking for AU coins, there are some that you probably would need $500+ on

It would depend a bit on which types are you looking to include in the set. Many members are doing the dansco 7070 which I would guess would start around $1500-2000 if most of the 19th century issues are around G/VG. If you are planning on including some of the ones with the heraldic eagle or some of the common gold types, you could be looking at $500+ per coin for some of them. You will need a small fortune if you are planning on including some of the pre-1834 gold type.

I am putting together a 7070 slabbed version and so far I have about $6711.70 in to it...so far with 13 holes to go, not including the Gold page.

It really depends on what you want to put into it, but it is not cheap, no matter what condition coins you choose to fill the "holes".

One thing I can say with a certainty, we want to see the collection as it grows!

Almost an impossible question. So much depends on the dates and conditions of the coins. Could actually go into the many thousands of dollars and even into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Put one 1856 Flying Eagle cent in there and poof, already into the thousands. Or all coins of common dates and all beat up could run you very little.

Grab a Red Book and a calculator, pick out the most common date coin of each type and grade you would accept and start adding.

I place a reasonable FMV on my completed 7070 of $2355. Coins range from G to Proof. I think it looks great and others here would feel the same, while still others would turn up their noses at it. Most expensive coins in there are the Seated Liberty dollars, No Motto (F-15) and Motto (VF-30), which I have conservatively valued at $250 and $300, respectively. I probably could have completed it for a few hundred bucks less than I spent without dipping into cleaned or damaged coin territory. Good luck!

About three years ago, I sold a full 7070 album to a dealer for just under $6,000. The coins were VF-proof, but there were only a few under XF. I'd venture that a respectable VG+ set could now be put together for under $2,500.

Without the gold page I have give or take around $21K in my v3.0 7070. That's basically high VF/XF for the Early Coppers and AU through Proof for the rest. It'll be a while before I attempt v4.0!

either way you go, grading and whatnot, its an adventure. it is both an expensive and fun journey to embark on and have fun with it.

I am only about $1300 into mine so far, but I still have 50-60 holes.

When I decided to assemble a type set in the 7070, I set the bar a bit higher than I probably should have. I have stumbled onto some high grade pieces at very reasonable prices, but having a lot of EF and AU coins makes me want to complete the set at that level or thereabouts. I now find that coins that are VF, are disappointing for me to have in the set.

Probably the smartest thing I could do in order to complete the set, is to lower the bar a bit, and kick out coins like my MS bust dime and Half, my MS seated half (no motto) and there probably aren't many type sets with an 1880 Shield nickel representing the "no rays" variety.

People always used to fill type sets with junk, and I don't really want to do that, but the reality is that the 7 coins I need to complete the set, will set me back 2-3 thousand dollars unless I get extremely lucky ... and while I've found some stuff to buy that I think I can turn a buck on ... finding the coins ofthe grade that I want in the type set at a price I like, is proving to be an excercise in futility. I'm just a wee bit frugal ya see. Therein lies the problem.

At least I'm not in a "race" to complete it ... except in my own mind.

Your set can be whatever you want it to be, and if you set the bar to say VG, I'd say you could put together a decent set for under 1500 dollars ... minus the gold issues.

I am in no means "rich", the coins that I pick up for my 7070 are the result of selling other "items" of mine which have been put on the "back burner" or I value the 7070 coins more than an Antique Pocket Watch that I sold recently. I have even taken on a part-time job to feed my collection.

It is a challenge to complete this set...but I have had a great time (sometimes frustrating, getting sniped) putting it together!

I probably spent around $4000 on mine; average grade is probably VF, with later coins higher and some of the expensive early coins a little lower - especially the early coppers which get exponentially more expensive as the grades increase.

This is what I am doing too. You can take my approach and if you have kids it's a good approach. Right now I am trying to get it mostly filled and then I an going to go back and upgrade. Like I slapped a F Barber quarter and dime in for example knowing I will upgrade later for nicer grades. When I take out my fillers I am going to put them in a type set for my little boy who is 3. That way he gets just a fun set when's he's older and I don't have to look at a mostly empty set in the beginning.
