Being a newbie I always thought the OGP for ASE included an airtite. I was recently told its not actually an airtite its just a capsule. As I've never seen an airtite in person, what's the difference?

Air-tites in my opinion feel sturdier, slightly heavier, and less cheap than the OGP capsules. I also feel like the air-tites are less prone to scratches and look smoother.

I believe air-tite is a brand name that is sometimes used as a common term for many capsules. Sort of like band aid being used for self adhesive bandages. This may cause some of your confusion on the difference between the two. Someone please correct me if I am wrong about this.

That's all just my opinion of having dealt with both I'm sure there are more scientific explanations on the differences. All of my silver bullion goes straight into air-tites regardless of strike type. I enjoy the look with the foam ring and the ability to view and enjoy my silver without getting fingerprints all over it and with added protection against the environment.

I think the nail was hit on the head when it was mentioned as a brand name that most people just call those capsules now.

I also like the foam ring airtites. They look great and the coin doesn't move inside them. You can buy tubes for them and store coins of different diameters together very smoothly. I also agree they are very smooth and sturdy feeling. I recently took my Pandas, Koalas and Kookaburras out of their mint capsules and transferred them to airtites. Haven't decided yet what to do about ASE mint tubes if I am just going to leave them in the tube or move them into airtites. They come on 2 styles direct fit which are like mint capsules and ring-type which have a foam ring inside. With either style you have to order them specifically for the size of your coin.

You are thinking of a genericized trademark.

Thanks for the education! Do the standard "Airtite" brand capsules fit in the mint packaging? I'm honestly probably going to leave them as is for now but that would be good to know if I decide to upgrade :)

I do not know if they are the same size or not. I suspect they are not.

If you are keeping the coins in the OGP packaging, I would leave them in the OGP capsules. The packaging should protect the capsule from damage. Be sure to store your stuff in a good environment (low humidity and stable temperature).

Thanks for the new term jbuck!

I wouldn't count on even the direct fit air-tites fitting the OGP as I believe the plastic is actually thicker (leading to the stronger more secure feeling) than the OGP capsules. But the tubes they make for air-tites are very nice and have a vacuum like seal. And as starbux mentioned you can fit different coins in the tube as long as they are the same holder type. I buy I-type holders for my silver bullion.

I think the cost vs benefit of switching to air-tites over OGP is well worth it. You can get the air-tites for about $1 each from your LCS and even less online.
