I got this coin on ebay, but when I look at the surface... to my untrained eye it looks like prints or marks of some sort on the surface!... could that be?

It's still a proof, just not a PF70.

Correct, proof describes how it was made, not the grade.

Also looks like an SGS holder so it was never a 70 anyway....

It just surprised me to see any marks on the coin. I thought proof would have been polished and with no blemishes. So I understand that the reference is to how it was made, and not the grade. If you had a regular uncirculated dollar of this type versus a proof, how can they tell? is the luster different on these? I notice a difference on other coin types, but not so much on these Sac dollars.

It was a lot easier as a kid going into coin shops... now they aren't as easy to find, so I'm on ebay and the forums trying to learn! Thanks for the replies.

Proof coins can look that when if they were to enter circulation. It happens, some people get them and do not realize what they are.

Because of how proof coins are made, they are still easy to pick out, even in poor condition. The square rims and strike will hold up.

The easiest tell on this and most modern (1968+) proof coins is the S mint mark.

Being the proud owner of an SMS graded coin, it should come as no surprise that they do not grade on a 70 point scale, but instead a 140 point scale.

The marks are mostly just because of who graded it, I dont think they even print labels that dont say 70 on it. If you had a PCGS, or NGC or Anacs you wouldnt see those marks on a 70.

You are correct proof refers to how it is made by the type of process and plancet used as opposed to it being a grade. Once a proof always a proof no matter the condition.

The main difference if the mirror like background modern proofs have. You can see it around the 2000 date on the picture you showed. Uncir coins will not have the mirror like image while proofs do. Mint marks can also help identify what type of coin as they are usually different for the different versions. The uncir versions will have a clean background but not that mirror like image

After that coin left the mint and before it was encapsulated someone put their fingers all over it. But do get a regular business strike P or D and compare it to this coin and you will still be able to see that there is considerable difference between the proof and business strikes. Even with the fingerprints this one will be clearly different.
