Is there any mint lustre on or around those ridges? Impossible to say, even with good pictures in this case. I would need to look at the coin in hand before deciding to buy.

That is one of the problems with ebay. You can't examine the coin with a loupe.

In this case it makes it very hard to judge the condition. It does not surprise me that opinions range from VF to Unc.

This problem is not necessarily the seller's fault.

In my opinion it is a weakly struck reverse,38 crowns are often like this, have a look at this MS 64 the reverse looks almost identical IMO.

With that much lustre and detail on the obverse this would have to go minimum EF or up to AU55.
I think the sellers pic's didnt pick up the detail on the reverse ( you can see the ding in the left orb tho).
Still a $300 up coin anyway

appleange107: The hair detail on the picture of the coin youn have presented is much more strongly defined, especially above the ear.

You just have to figure out if the reason for that is that it is more sharply struck, or in better condition. At MS64, mint lustre should be present in this area.

appleangel07, In the example you gave you can still see the left hand ridge and the right hand one is even more defined, even with grove beside it.

The ebay coin to me looks like it has a flat surface where these ridges should be, that says wear to me, not a weak strike.

Still the cross on the orb on the MS64 is missing too, that just confuses the heck of of me. It is one of my main indicators.

NOTE: I'm a complete noob at this so my opinion is not a accurate guide.

This is a 1937 coin, They have exactly the same design as the 38 coin.
It has full cartwheel lustre.
What grade would you give this one

I find it harder to grade from scans than photos because its impossible to see the lustre. If that crown has full lustre then I would say aUNC because it has a few marks on the obverse, enough to not call in UNC.

Ok Trouts 37 I'd put at aUnc or slightly better.

There are a couple of bag marks on the obverse under the chin and on the cheek. But the hair over the ear is very clear.
From what I understand bag marks will not detract from Unc, could be wrong.

Reverse my only issue is the cross on the orb. It does not quite cross in the middle.

So I don't think it would go Unc, Close but.... not quite.

Any thoughts on this Crown,it was purchased about 10 years ago from a 2nd hand dealer as aUNC but I don't think its that.It has the ridge on the Fleur things & the Orb but lots of little mint marks esp on the Obverse with the reeding teeth.I will post a scan of the Obverse when I find it.What worries me is the Lustre, not sure if its genuine or been dipped as I can't see any cleaning marks.
