If you were a New Zealand collector and you had the cash I would buy it now. They are so rare and I wouldnt want to miss out.

Quote: New Zealand collector Is that a collector in NZ or just a collector of NZ coins? English can be a funny language sometimes. I do collect NZ coins and was looking for a 1935 threepence (only one missing from my set) when I stumbled on the Waitangi crown.

Yes I meant collector of New Zealand coins. I love their coins and after Australian they're the second largest country in my collection. Coincidentally I purchased a 1935 threepence last week. Found it at a small antiques shop out of Adelaide for $65 which is an excellent price IMO. They're a real hard date with such a low mintage. If it was an Aussie or US coin with such a mintage they would be worth much more. There just doesn't seem to be a big interest in NZ coins which is a shame because theyre so nice.

$65 for a 1935 3d is very good. They are selling for NZ$200+ (AU$160) on Trade Me.

I couldnt believe it when I saw it for $65! The only NZ coin I don't really like it the florin and the penny and half penny are my favourite. When I went over there earlier this year I went to the waitangi treaty grounds which is where the treaty was signed that is depicted on the reverse. Being able to afford one of the crowns would have been a nice momento but I have a feeling i'll never own one.

I say that was a bloody good buy Matt. I will cross my fingers to find something even approaching that. Jeff PS. Waitangi crown went for NZ$7,960!

I put it around aF. What do you think Jeff? That yellowy colour on the obverse isn't visible in hand. I was a bit shocked when I saw the photo. The best NZ coin I had was a 1954 BU penny. I purchased it for $40 from a dealer in Auckland and then sold it to a dealer in Wellington a week later for $150. I was happy to get $110 profit but regret selling it a little now. I think I could have got a fair bit more plus it was so beautiful. I also has a 1935 Sixpence and Shilling I purchased and sold in the same transactions which were nice. Purchased both for $20 each and then sold them for $50 and $60. I also wish I held onto those two. My favourite NZ coin is a UNC bahama mule. It is just such a monumental stuff up by the mint

I would say F is about right from photos. Do I see some die cracks on the reverse? 2011 catalogue gives NZD$220 for AVE/CIRC and $400 for VF. Not sure where they get those values -coin dealer's fantasy maybe?
I do like those Kruger-Grey designs for New Zealand; quite distinctive.
You seem to be good at buying coins then selling them and, later, having second thoughts! To keep up the record you could sell this one to me for $130 (100% profit). No? thought you might say that.
And, yes a Bahama mule is on my to get list. They are still affordable at around $50.

I have a couple of the 1935 3d's. I'll have to dig them out this weekend and take some pics.
If I had the money I would own the crown in a heartbeat.

There is a couple small die cracks. $130... i'll pass. I'm starting to learn from my mistakes The dealer who puts those catalogues together is way off. I didnt meet him when I went there as he was out of town but I did hear stories... enough said.

I quite like the NZ threepences. I have 7 now in PCGS slabs all from MS64-MS67. They're cute little things.
A PCGS MS63 NZ 1935 threepence sold earlier this year for $1500.
