ALEXANDER III. THE GREAT 336-323 BC AR-DRACHM SARDEIS (SARDES) ZEUS EAGLE SCEPTER MONOGRAM BEE NICELY TONED ! OVAL FLAN ! GREEK KINGS OF MACEDONIA Alexander III., 336-323 BC. Sardes, 323-319 BC AR-Drachm Ov.:Head of Herakles r., wearing lion skin. Rv.:Zeus Aëtophoros std. l., monogram above bee in l. field. Price P102; Müller-:. 4,25 gr - 17 mm NICELY TONED! OVAL FLAN! VF I bought this on Vcoins, I put in an offer which was rejected and had intended in that case to buy a cheaper one (there were a couple for £55 each) but I couldn't bring myelf to buy either...I paid £95 for this one just because it is well centred and well preserved. Maybe it wan't cheap but I got what I wanted, a special coin for my collection :)

A great example as a first ancient. It sets a high standard for your next ancient purchase. I think you did well. Regards, Martin

That is a nice coin and if you're happy with it, that's what counts the most.
I can't speak for the price, at $150 USD is out of my budget range. I would also wait for a cheaper price and coin to come along. Sometimes you find a coin that you can't resist regardless of price. I bet this is such a coin. Congratulations on your first ancient coin!

If you are still collecting in 50 years, this coin will still be in your collection. If you had used the same money to buy 100 pieces of scrap metal that once were coins, it would be unlikely that more than one would be of interest by the end of this year. By my definition, you did the right thing. Now you can only begin plotting your next acquisition and the next and the next...

Yes, a very nice one for a start !
Attribution would be Price 2628 (TI over bee left), not Price P102. When a Price reference starts with "P", the coin is in the name of Philip III, and with "L", it's in the name of Lysimachus.

That is one nice drachm!
Make sure that you keep all of the documentation that relates to it's purchase. Keep all such documentation in a separate folder with all ancient coin purchases, to prove provenance of your collection. It also ecourages you to maintain a high standard, and keep a good record of it. That will make it a whole lot easier to sell it out of your estate.

That's a fantastic coin. It's about as good as they get for those drachms.

Wow! It is better preserved than a lot of the coins circulating today!
I agree with Doug, this coin will stay with you, if you stop collecting ancients, this will most likely stay. You may buy crappy coins, they come and go, but something this nice has a lasting impression.

David- I think you might need to think about a TETRADRACHM in similar condition so you have a matching pair.
