It finally arrived...and I am shelved over the difference between the "sellers images" and "mine". I can certainly understand the history of circulating coinage, but this is too much of a difference in lighting. The reverse I could definitely live with...it's the obverse, the head area in particular. The darkness resembles some form of over-sized helmet or hood. When you shell out a larger than normal amount of money, as expected with some of the 7070 coins, I want something to be proud of showing to family & friends. Or am I being too particular? I showed this coin to my mother today for her unbiased opinion and she said "ooh, I don't care for the crap around her head, it looks like a helmet (mom corrected me on her quote)."

What does the CCF think? I have three days to return the coin.

My advice, submitted respectfully, would be to return it. I have personally learned that if I don't like the coin the instant I see it, I never will. To me, that is one of the premier coins in a 7070 and your set, given the other coins I've seen that you're putting in it, deserves better. I have the feeling you would be more proud of a different coin somewhere down the road. And no, you're not being too particular.

I am unable to see any major difference in all three images.
I think you have come down with a case of "buyers remorse", You have clearly received the coin you bought and the sellers and the TPG's pic's clearly show the "Shadow" that you are worried about.
If the seller is reasonable they may refund you but I realy don't think you have a case for not getting the exact coin you bought.
If you don't like it then by all means send it back and hunt for a better one if you can.

If the seller has a flexible return policy and you won't be happy with it, return it. If they don't, I think it's yours as it doesn't look that different.

trout1105, thanks for your comments. I don't think that it is "buyers remorse", but...I was thrilled when I saw the reverse first and fliped it over and went Wow! and not in a good way either. I just did not think that the shadow was that prominent in the sellers and NGC's images. I am crushed, but I am going to contact the seller and send it back tomorrow. Like OneBowl stated; "that is one of the premier coins in a 7070 and your set, given the other coins I've seen that you're putting in it, deserves better". I am looking for a replacement through the same seller and they are pretty pricey as you can imagine...perhaps lay-a-way.

Thanks for the prompt and unvarnished replies!

Please keep 'em coming!

I was not being critical in any way,
You asked a question and I gave you an honest answer.It's just the way I am
The "trade in" idea you mentioned seems like a fantastic idea, Keeps the lines of communication open with your seller and at the end of the day everyone wins.
I hope this turns out well for you

trout1105, you are a well respected member of the CCF and I am grateful for your opinion. I was not implicating that you were critical, just honest, (unvarnished, straightforward, etc...) and I really respect that!

Here is another try at the obverse, taking advantage of what sunlight I have left (this one looks really good, I may have to use the sunset more often);

I agree w/ OneBowl completely. If you didn't like the coin when you first received it, you probably never will.

Send it back! I don't think you will regret it anytime down the road. All the coins that I've said "I like it, but..." about, I've had no regrets after sending them back. Your eye will always be drawn to it too. And that's not a good thing.

the sellers pic makes the helmet not as noticeable. Your pic makes it stand out. If I were the one shelling out the $, I'd likely send it back b/c I know every time I looked at it, I would see the helmet and wonder why I did not send it back when I had the chance.

not too bad but I see what your talking about. If you don't like it, you won't like it even if we told you how nice it is.

Your 7070 is a show place and, (if I hear you right), coins with distracting stains are not going to work for you.

So...

I would swap it out. You may be able to acetone this stain, BUT you'd have to break it out of the slab to do that and then you will own it. It's a big gamble; something I would not want to do. I'd go with the sure thing and swap it for a Seated dollar without "character"!!

That latest image really makes it stand out, for me at least that would affect the value significantly.

I agree that if you don't like it now you never will. let the seller know that you are looking at one of his other coins and he will probably be more likely to take it back knowing that you don't need a refund just an upgrade.

Then you probably did not want to see it from this angle (I was probably loosing my balance and got an "action" photo);

Am-I-Being-Too-Critical?--1860-O-Dollar-In-Hand

I really appreciate everyones comments, it only confirmed my initial reaction to the obverse. I am going to choose my words carefully trying not to offend the seller, I have a few ideas to exchange for, but it is not another dollar (Bust Half Dime and Seated quarter w/o Motto) at this time unfortunately. They have some nice Seated dollars but they are out of of my league, and almost double what this one ran for.

Thanks!

I do agree that the coin in the sellers image did look a little better. I dont think its such a difference that they were being deceitful by any means though.

But like others have said if you are unhappy with it that is what matters. If they take no questions asked returns I would send it back but be polite about it. Maybe some story how you no longer need it as you got one as a gift just to be polite. I dont think this is an instance were any sort of negative feedback needs to be left
