Here are some of mine:

- (A friend looking at my very high relief struck 1900's NFLD Half dollars, bought at junk grade price) "These would look really nice if you cleaned all that dirt off!

- I handed my boss my Moose Wildlife Silver Maple, and turned my back. He proceeded to take it out of it's holder and weight it using a deli scale before I could catch him. Thankfully, it's just a bullion coin, and he *did* hold it by the edges.

- A dad and son at my local dealer who came in looking for a 1/4 ounce gold coin. Handing over $400 or so dollars, he said how he wanted to carry it around in his pocket, and asked how to get it out of its case. Horrified, the dealer and I exchanged a glance, and he said "you don't". His son, meanwhile, pried it apart easily. I should mention it was a proof piece...

What about you guys?

A lady at my local bank told me that when her father passed away they found a safe in his house. (he wasn't a believer in banks)

When they opened it they found 35 crisp $1000 bills. Her and her brother split them and her sister in law proceeded to take them to her bank and deposit them all.

She said she tried hanging onto hers but when her husband was unable to work she had to...... Guess what.... Take all but 3 to the bank.

I don't think she was happy when I told her she could have received a good premium on them if she would have pursued other avenues...

Meanwhile, I am still waiting for 1 to fall into my lap. not thinking it will happen.

Thankfully, my family consists of my sister.
While she knows beans about coins, she has learned much.
Her impulse is "to clean", but she knows better.
She and I will eventually share in the bounty which is our inheritance.
I do the work and she trusts me.
I could not ask for more.
These little "faux pas" by family members is sad.
but, well, bad things happen.
Thus I say, over and over again, "TEACH YOUR FAMILY" or suffer the fate which has so sadly been written here.
And if they are unwilling to learn, well, SELL YOUR COINS and take a vacation!

Oh I have the best story! My dad - NO knowledge about coins or paper money bought me a 5$ and 10$ bird series with no security code and decided to take them out of the bill flips and put them in his wallet. "they didn't fit anywhere else" Uncirculated - AU now... Hahah!

I'll never have any of those above mentioned worries, no other human has ever seen my Collection during all the years I've possessed it. Some friends/family know I collect coins, but don't know the value or to what extent.
p.s.: always remember the W.W. II motto: "loose lips, sink ships".

It was a stormy traveling accross Missouri on I-70 towards St Louis that day. Winds were howling like a Banshee and rain fell in buckets. I was barely able to keep the car on the interstate. Stopped for gas just the other side of Columbia, walking to the station office a strange wind howled...seemed to say...Nnnnooooo....as I tried to evade the rain. The station attendant was in the office near a display case and as I entered a gigantic bolt of lightening exploded in the field across the parking lot. As I slowly regained my composure, I noticed a group of ASE's in the case with maps and sunglasses. Naturally they caught my eye but a loud clap of thunder heralding another lightening strike made us both jump from near the windows. There were both Proof and Uncirculated coins and as I admired some I noticed fingerprints on one of the Proofs. As I asked the attendant what happened to that Proof, he quickly pulled it out of the case, popped it out of the airtite, garbed it directly in the center of both obverse and reverse with his thumb and forefinger, and said

"Oh I pulled this beaut out so's you can get a good feel for the weight of the coin...you wanna hole it?"

Just then the wind shreiked ...Nooooooo....again.

I just heard a story from a local post office in a tiny town by me. The lady has worked there for years and sold this one elderly gentleman all of his coins that ranged in price from small amounts to $1000 coins. She said he bought lots. He recently passed away and his son who knew nothing about coins took them to a coin dealer who offered him face value for all the coins and he took it! He had told the post office lady about this and she nearly died. One of the coins he had bought had $100 face value but he paid $1000 for it at the post office.

I get really sad when I hear stories of;
1. People getting ripped off intentionally
2. People to stupid to get more than 1 opinion
3. The loss of interest in coins in younger generations. If he didn't like them maybe his future kids or grand kids would.

Speaking of deli scales, I once placed a toonie on one just to see it say 0.007kg, but it registered as 0.01kg. Last time I ever go in there!

Ive worked in delis before. Deli scales are only accurate to the nearest hundredth of a pound or nearest 10 grams.

Ah, then I'll place ten toonies on it next time for accuracy.

I always put my valuable Banknote collection album on the shelf after I'm done with it (so far, pretty normal) ...

Once, my young niece were in the house. As usual, I was viewing my collection. Totally forgot to place it on the shelf as I always do ... Went out & when I came back, I found my niece fighting over one of the "Most" valuable notes (Hong Kong), as, who's going to view it first!

They took the note out of the album page & played "Tug of War" with it!

Thank God, it was placed inside a rigid holder. Otherwise, it would got torn into two "equal" half pieces!!

Well, I almost committed a crime!!

Cheers
