I collect toned coins and most are from the 1982's through 1989. 1982 is the year when the change to zinc occured, plated with copper. Some 1982's are zinc and some are all copper. The only way I can tell them apart is to weight them. I find the solid copper 1982's do not tone as much. Beyond all the blistering and other common problems, I have a tendency to think that the toning is due to the zinc and such a thin layer of copper. I try to save all 1982's and later ones that are in great condition since thoses are hard to find.

So that kind of coloring could be natural?

I usually see that after they get subjected to detergent. Wait for others to confirm.

Monika, your coin looks to be AT (artificial tone) to me. A coin can be toned artificially toned in many ways. Some NT (natural tone) coins look very nice. If you get into collecting toned coins you will need to do a lot of research on toned coins so you can learn to tell the difference between NT and AT so you don't get burned. John1

Looks like it was heated up a bit. Not a natural toning like mine.

Heating up a zincoln too much can lead to it melting, because those how lower melting point than the coppers. I've burned a few pennies learning this, lol.

I save alot of darkend tone coins in rolls. They can continue tone to the point they turn black. When I first decided to keep these colorful coins I thought someone was using a black marker. I have tried to artificaly tone them to see if there was a differnce in toning, there was, but not an even tone and puddle lines. Got bored with that and let the toned ones come to me in the rolls. When ever I keep one I have to let one go back into the main stream otherwise I would go broke...lol
