If you look at the item specifics, he did mention "gallery" which generally means it's a Mint Copy.
Looks to have been acid dipped and "aged" to give it a more authentic look.
Some unsuspecting buyer might put a huge amount of money down on a worthless piece of junk.

Aren't the Gallery Mint Museum people supposed to have COPY stamped on the coins, like any legitimate reproduction? Can anyone see where it might have been filed off of this coin?

While visiting the Lincoln Memorial last week I picked up a package of reproduction confederate coins. None of them have "COPY" stamped anywhere and the only giveaway that they aren't real is the fact that they are all in perfect condition (well, that and the fact that they probably don't weight the correct amount since they aren't really made of silver and gold).

I guess the government is exempt from its own rules...

Here's the original GMM offering. That said, the image in this newsletter is clearly not the exact coin in the ebay listing; the letters within the band are in different positions. Does show where COPY was meant to be, though, which obviously explains why the seller notes that STATES UNITED is so "feint!"

I serious do not believe that is a Gallery Mint copy. Even with artificial aging it is not up to their quality. It might be someone else's copy. Heck it might even be real. From the images I can't tell. (I lean toward it being someone else's copy. The problem is that GMM tends to get blamed for copies made by other people. So just because they SAY Gallery Mint doesn't mean that it is a Gallery Mint piece.)

But why put "Gallery Mint Museum" on the description, for vermontensium's bright eyes to find, if they're trying to pass it off as real?

Do the same rules apply for marking it a copy if it's not legal tender? Technically, you could go into a store and buy a gum ball with a chain cent, but not a fugio cent.

I was wondering about that with barryg's Confederate reproductions. The Fugio was authorized by Congress; was its legal tender status revoked with the establishment of the US Mint?

Kind of my thoughts exactly. We don't have it in hand therefore, we can't weigh it. Looks very thin though...at least from what I can see from the sellers pic.

The Hobby Protection Act requires imitation numismatic items to be marked with COPY. They define imitation numismatic item to be something that represents itself as a genuine numismatic item but which it is not. Legal tender status does not matter. World coins, ancients, tokens, and medals are all numismatic items even though none are legal tender. Fantasy CSA coin are purporting to be numismatic items, Confederate coins, so they need to be marked as well. This is why I believe Carr's fantasies need to be marked. They purport to be 1964-D Peace dollars, 1931 SLQ, 1964 Franklin half etc but they are not, so they need to be marked as well according to the law.

I have to be honest, I hardly ever read the area where he actually says its from "Gallery Mint Museum". I usually look at the pictures and read the description and that's usually it. I am sure I am not the only one that does this and he is probably betting on that and that's why he doesn't mention it anywhere in the actual description he typed out

That's my point. If you don't mention that at all, you have plausible deniability ("I found it at an estate sale!").
