First... to the Forum!

Second: Your 1846 Large Cent is a Small Date. The closed 6 and the way it leans to the right are dead give-a-ways. I seem to recall about 60% of the 1846 Large Cents are small dates.

Examples with which to compare:

1846 Large Cent (Small Date)

Small,-Medium,-Or-Large-Date-Large-Cent? Small,-Medium,-Or-Large-Date-Large-Cent?

1846 Large Cent (Medium Date)

Small,-Medium,-Or-Large-Date-Large-Cent? Small,-Medium,-Or-Large-Date-Large-Cent?

1846 Large Cent (Tall Date)

Small,-Medium,-Or-Large-Date-Large-Cent? Small,-Medium,-Or-Large-Date-Large-Cent?

One thing to look for on the medium date is that the 6 has no lean and has a larger opening. In the small date, it either leans or is almost closed, like an 8. There are a few small varieties that are close and hard to distinguish. The tall is easy to tell because the 1 goes almost from the dentils to the UBA.

Another way to identify the three date types is by the crosslet on the 4. On the small date it is equal in size above and below the crossbar and is not joined to the foot of the 4. On the Medium date it is slightly longer below the bar and is joined to the foot. On the tall date it is noticeably larger above the bar coming to a point and leaning slightly right, once again it is not joined to the foot.

Tall date isn't too tough to get. Just keep looking. It's the medium date that is harder to find.
