Err- newbe question- what is a woody? Is it a brown Lincoln Cent or?

They are coins that look like they have a wood grain.

You'll notice that the coins in the photos above have streaks that make them look like wood.

What is the main reason a woody appears to be darkened with streaks?

Do these streaks occur 'after' this type of coin has been in the field a while?

Or does the streaking occur as a result of chemical and environmental factors present during the minting process?

The irregular streaks are caused by an incomplete mixing of the metals used in the planchets. They are known as an "improper alloy mix" and are very common on the earlier date Lincoln Cents.
