For what my poor opinion is worth, Moe,
I first notice the pole from the cap to the leg.
I like to see it sharp/sharper.
Secondly, the "Liberty" is not as sharp I would like to see.
So, with reluctance, a very fine 20 at best.
And most likely only a fine 15. On a good day.
My "gut" opinion is a fine 12.
The eagle, as always looks good no matter the grade.
I am, of course, most likely way off base.
This series is new to me.

F-12 to Vf-20 hard to make out how sharp Liberty is.

I would agree with F-15. Are the surfaces original? I don't see obvious cleaning signs but it seems too glossy considering the level of wear.

Looks like an F15, don't think it has enough to eek out a VF unless TPGs are a bit more lenient for the older dates.

I am thinking F-15 but the surfaces in particular the reverse don't look totally original to me. A great addition to your collection! You may or may not already know this but while doing a little bit of reading on this coin, I found out that this coin was struck in New Orleans and not Philadelphia. I had never knew that and found it so fascinating. I think I might have to add one of these to my collection.

I know ...

I was wondering how long it would take someone to notice that this was an 1840 (O) Medium Letter Half Dollar...

I have been looking for this coin for quite a while!

FYI: This is an old David Lawrence auction for an 1840 (O) VF30 Half Dollar. It appears the LIBERTY and the eagle's wings may be a bit weak from initial strike.

Moe . . Comparing yours to the David Lawrence link I would go VF-25. Very similar in appearance except the dentils are not as strong.

I believe this to be the lighting in Moe's pics. Here is a CBH of mine that found its way to Moe. My scans first, then Moe's pics. I had it for 50 years and if it was cleaned it was prior to my purchase.

I agree the glossy probably comes from my poor photographic skills and set up (the one lamp on my nightstand!!).

Ooooops! I never gave my opinion on this one!!

IMO, this would grade VF25. I see quite a few similarities with the David Lawrence auction, so it MIGHT slip into a VF-30 slab, but its really VF25. (I think a TPG might bump this coin in grade slightly for its rarity.)

F-12 was my original cursory estimate, but it actually would be F-15 with the back IMO.
