Ok here is the Buffalo nickel that I picked up for my type set. I think the dealer who sold it to me might have over graded it. so I don't know anything about grading buffalo nickes since this is my first one for my collection. So please give me your opion I know there are those of you who collect buffalo and can tell me what you think. after I give it a few days I will post what the dealer had listed on the holder.hope this picture works if you want to see them seprate you can look in my image gallery I have them seprate there.  |

Fine 12 -maybe Fine-15
You have to have the whole horn showing to get VF, Your's may, But I cant see it in the photo

Buffalo nickels are so hard for me to grade, I have a ms-64 that looks like a AU to me but everyone that collects these things assured me (without knowing the grade) that it was a MS coin and most of them guessed in the 63-64 range, here is the obverse of mine for you to compare (I don't have a reverse picture in my gallery to show)

It looks like a weak 3/4 maybe full horn but it's hard too see with the photo. If its a full horn I'd grade it XF.

I'm going to say VF-20 with a weak horn and tail.

I see the entire horn to the tip. I don't think the strike on these is very sharp, though I am certainly not an expert in this series. I'd call it EF40. Very nice coin!  |

AU-50 ,,but I'm betting the dealer had it graded as MS-61 or 2,, the strike on these coins is often mis leading,, but slight wear is evident on the cheek, buff's front shoulder on your coin.

I do see the outline of the horn mostly, btter than I did last night , however I Still think the horn is not quite complete. And That is the reason I can not grade higher than F Other wise I would say Ef at the Highest If it had a full horn

I played with the idea of an AU grade, but I felt that there was a little too much wear showing on the shoulder and head for that.

Ok I was around the same area of everyone with EF-AU, taking a close look at it after you guys started talking about was looked at the horn and they do look full but a little weak. but the dealer had on the holder at the show. MS60+. but I thought that might have been pushing it but I do no with the buffalo it is hard to judge the grade so I just bought the one in my price range and the one that was a nice looking one. I paid 25 dollar for it so I don't think I did to bad. unless it really is a VF or lower grade.

$25 is not bad for that coin - especially if you like it. Buffalos are really hard to grade from a picture. For some reason the picture always looks better than the coin. See Okie I think yours is more like AU-UNC Than djlusters coin is Sorry!! djluster but $25 is not to bad of a price Buffalos are hard to grade, exspecially by photo

I don't know what it might grade without pulling out the book. Never graded one. The rims look to me to have seen some circulation. Are the rims normally struck weak? I have seen a few and they did have a weak spot on the rims, but only on one spot of each side. This coin up top has a weak spot opposite each other on the obverse. Just wondering if it was struck that way or if it's wear.

Mike - it is pretty typical on early Buffalos to have the rim blend with Liberty and sometimes with the date, or just disappear altogether in other places. You see it even on MS-65 examples. That is part of what I think Susan is talking about when she says weak strikes are common.
