Garrett Treasure Ace 250. The Treasure Ace series has proven itself in the field over the years, the prices are reasonable, they're simple to operate, and they hold their resale value really well when you feel the time has come to upgrade...

I just won one on ebay late last week; it's on it's way in the mail. Can't wait!

Play grounds,The kind with loose bark chips,Sand I've gotten a little older now and don't care to dig very much anymore so these play grounds are easy diggin if you want to call it that.Push the sand or the chips over and there's your target.in the past year and half I've pulled 32 gold rings a few gold bracelets and little over $750 in change. Then there's the silver rings and trinkets. You won't find any old coins but it works for me.
I've had my ace 250 for almost 3 years now and I have abused this this machine time and time again.Left it in the back of my truck exposed to the morning dew for about a week "I forgot about it" Left in the wife car during the summer when it gets 130/150 degrees inside.I've dropped this thing more times than care to count.Foam grip needs to be replaced as it's not all there.Chipped part of the battery housing.I've metal detected with a clear plactic sandwich bag taped around it in the rain.I'm sure the day will come when I'll push that button and it's not going to sing to me but you can bet your bottom dollar I buy another 250. Yeah! its a good machine

A very good place is sidewalk tear outs. I've found some nice 1800s coins underneath the concrete slabs.

Whatever you choose to buy, I would advise against a cheap entry level detector. I have a White's and love it. My sister bought a low budget detector and will never use it again because it doesn't come close to mine. If you can budget it, get a middle of the line detector and hopefully it won't be tossed in a hall closet after a couple of trips. IMO

check out the european version of the garret, its better suited to our soil content, having said that, the only thing wrong with our ace250 so far is we havnt had enough time to find anything good yet, but I have no doubts that it will given time.

I have the Whites GMT for gold hunting, and the ACE 350 for parks and beaches. I love it! Great machine :)
