Hi all!
I just wanted to share a project I have pretty much finished. It's a box to hold my collection of coins from around the world. I got the box at a yard sale for a couple bucks. (Yes, it has some paint or something on the top, but otherwise it's in great condition.) It was originally a box to hold slides, and made by Nega-file of Furlong, PA. According to their website, it's made of mahogany. I figure if it's good enough not to damage slides, it's got to be good enough for my coins, which are nothing too fancy. I got some velvet and cut it to fit and am using acid free paper to hold it in place and separate different countries. I haven't finished the right-most slot. I want it to be an area where I can put individual coins on display, but I haven't entirely figured out how I'll do that. Can't wait to hear what you all think :)

Cool looking box and you got at a yard sale? Hope you got it at a good price.

Have you thought of putting the coins in 2X2's?

If the box was designed to hold slides, then it should hold the 2X2's just right.

Just a thoght.

Yes, that's precisely right. For some reason though, I'm not huge on 2x2s. I like being able to hold the coin myself, unless it's old, in which case I put it in a case, which is sometimes worth more than the coin itself. Which is stupid! But I just never liked 2x2s. Also, for the purposes of this case, they wouldn't do a good job, because then I couldn't see them easily. I would have to take them out one by one. A binder with slots would work better. But not look nearly as fancy as a dark green velvet lined mahogany box! And to answer an earlier question, the box was $2 or $3, the velvet was similar, and the paper I had around anyways, so it was very affordable considering how awesome it looks (if I do say so myself!)

Are those paper or plastic dividers? If paper, you need to make sure they are acid free. If plastic, make sure they are PVC free. Other than that I really love that box!

Difficult to see all the details. Please send it to me for a closer inspection.
Not likely, HUH?
Really nice looking.
Rest in Peace

That looks great and you gave me a good idea -- I'm going to hunt garage sales of old silverware boxes. People sell off the silver but what happens to the boxes? The forms that hold the silverware in place would have to be removed but I suppose that's doable.

No problem, just leave it as is. It is still very nice.

Great idea, space always seems to be an issue as the collection grows. Great way to keep them together and not take up a ton of space.

Im a little ocd so id probably sort them by type
