I placed a order earlier today at mint.ca and on the order confirmation page, it said new penny tribute coins are coming September 25.

I have no idea what they are. Anyone got any ideas?

No idea, but what about...

A solid silver penny, just like the one that was sold in the Fine Silver Proof Set - 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 (2012)

I'd buy one if the Mint sold it for $ 20/30

How about one made of solid gold? A copper penny weights about 3 grams, a gold penny would be about twice that weight.
Knowing how the RCM prices gold, that would be a $ 450/500 penny!

Just a hunch, but since it will be fall, they may do a variety of fall colours.

How about of set showing the various penny designs over the years? An evolution in proof would be nice.

Looks like we were pretty close on the predictions eh?

Unfortunately though jpaiva83, that penny is going to cost more than 20 bucks.

@ CC-Ottawa, yeap, looks like we were both nearly right.

I never thought about a 5oz version of the coin, which, does look nice.
But at $ 500? ouch! I think I will stick to the Aussie 5oz coins for now, them being ~ $ 200 :)

That would have been the best idea. Perhaps, flip the standard concept. Solid gold, with a silver plated maple leaf.

1/25 oz ~= 1.25 grams, so about 1/2 the weight of one cent.

The 5 oz. silver just doesn't make any sense. It's a giant. The 1/2 oz is novelty enough, 5 oz is just ridiculous. A one cent dimension solid gold would probably price the same, but be far more logical and interesting.

If the new penny tribute costs about $300+ per oz, would you guys think it is worthy ?
Rest in Peace

I just saw one from the "2012 fine silver set" go on ebay for $124 (over 1/2 the price of the issue price of the set!)- at that price, the guy paid about $1000/oz of silver. Even if it was pure gold, it would have only been about $200.

The five-piece Fine Silver Cent set is not about bullion value -- this one is a numismatic play. The question is "Are there enough traditional cent collectors out there who feel they need to add this fantasy NCLT set to their cent collection to keep it complete?"

If there are, the set should do well on the secondary market. If not, the value of the set will likely retreat to about issue price over the next year or so. In any case, I believe the set will see an initial rise in selling price due to its almost certain sell-out next week and subsequent hype. An initial price escalation to $200+ wouldn't surprise me.

Just my thoughts...

At that price you could buy some absolutely stunning Non NCLT silver coins.
Unless silver goes up to $100 per oz in the next 3-4 years you will take a hit on the 5oz coin because these type of coins normally revert to a bit over melt in that time frame

The 5 oz coin is very low mintage at 1500. Plus its huge size would look great in a display case.

That's only one I won't be getting, the 5oz. Fingers' crossed it will come down in price over the next year so I can justify getting one. Beautiful coin though. Should be a stunning coin to see the penny design enlarged ten-fold.
