After a long Coinstar drought I actually found something yesterday. A tarnished 1990 pound coin (withdrawn from circulation in 2017) and five modern nickel-coated steel 5 pence pieces! I am wondering if this particular machine is badly adjusted, as I've found new post-2010 nickel-steel 5p coins in the reject slot several times but I can't remember ever finding one of the older cupro-nickel type.

NumisRob, you got me to thinking (generally a bad thing!). CoinStar machines in the UK (and the Continent) have to sort through a vast array of coins from all over. How discriminating are they with ones from other countries, vintage coins, Euros, etc.?

I'm no expert on this, and I'm pretty sure that British people check the reject slot more thoroughly than Americans when using CoinStars, as we have much higher value coins in everyday use and losing a few £1 or £2 coins could seriously impact one's weekly budget. But I've found quite a few foreign coins, mostly Euros, and the machines seem to reject all demonetised coins, such as the larger 5p and 10p and the circular brass pre-2016 £1 coins.

Just a general question. The CoinStar machine in the grocery where I shop never has anything in its reject slot. If there were, how do you collect said coins? Ask a cashier for them? Just pick them up & put them in your pocket?
I would feel "strange" in just taking them. Is there a protocol or are they there for the taking and it is expected someone will help themselves?

Sharks, I see it as free money abandoned by whoever last used the machine. There's rarely anything in the reject bin at my local grocery - perhaps 5% of the time. It could be that people are more diligent about checking the rejects, the next customer grabbing them, or the cashiers working the nearby registers getting them.

In my case I suspect the latter reason.

Coinstar was out of service but I did find a nice red-brown 1981 copper cent underneath and a 1972 copper cent (not sure if it's one of the DDOs) in the loading tray
