On the 64 off center nickel , it is a prooflike off center . This coin demonstrates what an error coin can explain . If you look at the unstruck portion of the coin you will notice that the planchet was burnished prior to the strike . This demonstrates that the mint did indeed take extra steps to produce prooflike strikes .

Here is another example of what errors can explain . Some planchets such as scalloped planchets are scalloped before strike while others such as this nickel were round before the strike with the collar forming the sides .
