I've noticed that compared to other denominations, a disproportionately large number of early copper is not slabbed. At the ANA show, except for a few ultra rare coins, nearly none were slabbed. Is this because the TPGs are too critical of copper? To many people getting corroded and environmental damage markings?
Early copper has the most dedicated and knowledgeable collector base in numismatis, and these people grade to a far stricter standard than the TPG's. That's why you'll find an EAC grade given alongside the TPG grade in many auctions.
A lot of the early copper comes damaged or cleaned to a lesser or greater extent. TPG's are not normally keen on slabbing them when they have these problems.
For me that is good! There is no implied extra cost added, if it is not slabbed.
You still have to make up your own mind on the price, taking into account of all of the problems an early copper coin may have. You are also in a position to negotiate a lower buying price.
