I've seen this design before, but never with that hologram looking color on the hands. I've shown friends before and they say it was painted, but there's no way in my opinion this is painted. Too thin, and perfect. Other than where it has been wore or chipped from circulation.

Some info would be cool. It's a 2004 P btw

my guess is as good as yours. If an individual did this then he does very good work..lol

I was just wondering if this was just something the Mints did in part of a series or something.

I doubt it was the Mint. More likely a coin dealer, HSN type dealer.

Ahh. I see... Selling a nickel for $19.99 type deal.

But don't worry, if you call now you get 2 for the price of 1!

That is pretty neat. I'll keep it just for it's oddness but. Not expecting its value to increase over its current $0.0500348 value.... lol

I was gifted a set of nickles a couple years back.
It includes hologram coins that look like your picture.
Also had Gold plated, Silver plated and platinum plated coins along with the hologram coins.
Least thats what the paper with the coins called them.

hmm. Interesting Captain, I can't seem to find them on the web. Would be interesting to find and see if these sets are still available to purchase.

Looks like a hologramed coin that circulated for awhile and wore off some of the hologram.http://www.icollector.com/2004-Ulti...ke_i13215567

Could the hologram simply be a sticker affixed to a normal coin?

Some company, outside of the US Mint, did the hologramming. You can see this place is selling them:
