Congrats, on finding a semi key date in your change, not a bad one either.

OK, I have wanted to ask -- what is a woodie? When I hear the term I think of those automobiles which had wood paneling on them. It certainly helps to explain the strange patterns which I have seen over the years.
I never found a 1914-s in circulation, and that was upwards of fifty years ago. I like the full rims. A no-question good?
98 years old and going strong! We should all be so lucky.

ninamason, Not a key nor a semi-key, but an, "Oh, by the way, these are dates which are often overlooked."
Between 1909-S VDB and 1914-D (the two key dates), the low mintages of the branch mints were not saved. They were hard to find in change years ago and today they command respect.
Our friend Peaceman did very well with this find.

Wood grained appearance from improper mixing when alloying base metals.

I'd like to know what that fraction of a second just before being able to focus on the mint mark was like? Were you thinking it might just be a D?

That mint mark blob for the S might leave one to think it "could" be a D, for a second anyway. I once saw a 1916 S dime at a coin show that I had to look at 3 times to make sure it was an S and not a D. Still a 1914 S is a nice find.
