I have 2 very very nice and spotless Franklin half dollars. I will attach pictures below. Are these 2 coins worth getting graded? What would they be worth graded by NGC/ANACS? I don't say PCGS because I don't have the money for a membership there to have them grade the coins and I can do it through NGC or ANACS for less money. At what point do I say or does anyone say "I should send these proofs in to get graded"? The spotting on the coins comes from the cardboard flips and is on the plastic, not the coins.. Thanks! All responses welcome! Edited by kylecolb 09/11/2012 5:05 pm

Very nice! I say leave them raw, but I am biased against slabs.

Unless they are cameo or dcam I don't think it is really worth the cost to have them graded.

If they are cameo or dcam then get it graded. Or if its a earlier year.

With over a million proofs made for this year they are a common coin. They do not appear to be cameo. Save your money on grading services and continue your quest for more coins instead.

Great coins, but not worth the cost to have them graded.

kylecolb, I think you should get them graded. NGC would be ok...learning how to send them in and you will be learning more about grading. It might be something you might want to start to do.You won't get a super grade but you'll have the experience IMHO..... These are very nice looking coins, love the Franklins....

Very nice coins and having them in an ANACS slab would not be a bad thing at all. Better protection than any 2x2 and its got a solid grade.

I have to disagree. Those Franklin's are beautiful but as stated above quite common with the mintage. Keep them in flips instead of spending the extra $15-20 dollars to have them graded. Get a 1955 (Bugs) in that condition then you are talking a different story. They do not appear to be DCAM's at all so you shouldn't expect an increase in value because they are slabbed, you would be out the money for the grading plus the cost of the coin. You can never hope to recoup the difference unless Silver went to $100.00

I would not have them slabbed but I wouldn't leave them in the flips either. Buy some good airtight capsules for them. Better protection against damage and toning at very low cost and probably better for viewing as well, less distortion. I love the fully brilliant proof era coins. Even though the cameos are sought after because of value and beauty, there is, to me, something wonderful about the fully brilliant proofs. I would love to see a fully brilliant proof ASE in one of these sets the mint is putting out.

I see no reason to slab a coin with the exceptions of, for insurance purposes, or when I am to sell it. So if the coins are raw and not for sale, I suggest just putting them in airtites and admire those beauties.

The only reason to slab Franklin proofs is to get the cameo or dcameo designation. Caution on this... both sides need the cameo effect and not just the obverse.

Not only that but there can be no break in the frost on the devices. The TPG's have gotten a lot stricter on this lately.
