The disappearing variety?

It's in the 2011 and 2012 Charlton, and is gone in 2013.

I believe there has been some controversy about this one for some time. I remember talking to a dealer at the last Coin Expo in Toronto, and he said he didn't believe in it.

Then again, Charlton still has the 1896 20c NT1 S96 listed. And I don't think anyone has ever seen that one.

The existence or non-existence of these is important to me because that would determine whether or not I've completed the domination (w/major varieties) or not.

According to a couple of Dealers (East Coast Coins) that deal in Newfoundland coins lists the .20 cent 1896 as Large 96 and also the Small 96. I have one but, I don't know which one it is.

As far as the 1899's go, Manz in Regina has on his store page, all 3 with the small 9's sold, I have the large one but, missing the 'hook' and the small.

Newfoundland 1896 definitely has:

1896 20c NT1 L96
1896 20c NT2 S96
1896 20c NT2 L96

So, there are two different obverses and two different sizes of the 96. But, the S96 seems to have been paired only with the NT2.

What's a small obverse? Most of us only know OBV1 and OBV2.
An answer for the large 99 vs small 99 question would be much appreciated.
