I am new to metal detecting and just bought a Garrett ace 350. It comes with and upgraded coil and a set of headphones. I paid a total of $257.95
I been looking at detectors for quite a while and went ahead and pulled the trigger.
What say you veteran detectors did I do okay? Didnt want to spend a ton on my first detector.
Hoping this will be a fun hobby for my wife and I. And we can get some exersice while enjoying meteal detecting.

you'll be fine. where are you going to hunt? The Ace 350 and 250 are ok on sand but not wet sand if you're going to beach hunt.

If you're going to hunt parks and public areas, please don't dig holes. Buy a pinpointer to go along with the detector and use a long screwdriver to make a hole large enough to use it in. Large plugs can be dug in forests/field areas.

Good luck

That's about what I spent on my White's Coinmaster II back in '77, (I was 15). Technology has come a long way baby! Sounds like a deal, get out there and have fun!

I have the ACE 350 and really like it. Easy to operate, nice depth detection, 90% accurate target ID.
I use mine out in California with my friend at parks and beaches...works great.
Let us know how you do!

I will be hunting for the most part in clay based soil. South eastern Illinois.
But am planning a late fall metal detecting trip to Nevada.
I have a friend out there has been detecting for 40 years. Lots of ghost
towns old mines and places he has a greed to teach me how to use a detector.
