Hello,

I require some assistance correctly identifying and grading these Chinese coins. Excuse me for the poor photos but they were taken by a third party.

Once each coin is correctly identified and graded please go to:

http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/Wo...e-Guide.aspx

and attempt to find 'each' coin.

Please provide a grade and a URL for 'each' coin using the above NGC World Coin Price Guide web site.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not big into Chinese coins but since you have the site why is it a bother to do the searching youself?

I do not speak or read Chinese and the site that I provided uses only the English language.

Taking the time to learn another whole new language to accurately and quickly find out the identity of a couple of coins does not make sense to me.

In all honesty, I'd much rather be able to do it myself to avoid any chance of receiving comments like this.

That is the purpose of having a family like CCF where everyone can draw upon each others expertise to save time.

PS:

Another reason I am not doing it myself is because I am also requesting a grade of these coins and the referred-to web site does not give separate photos of the different grading level designations.

True but always relying on other people to do 100% of the work will never really help you in the long run.

Pretty sure the grades and pricing of the coins on NGC's website only reflect actual slabbed coins by NGC and in no way would reflect the pricing of yours.

The 1st coins pictures are fine for a basic assessment but the other 2 we'd need a little higher quality pictures to properly grade them.

1. Guangxu 34 (1908) Peiyang Dollar. This would be listed under Zhili Province. Don't have the Krause so I can't give you the number

I would be extremely, EXTREMELY careful of this coin. Even if it is non-magnetic, check the weight and quality of the denticles. This is one of the first "good fakes" I saw (and bought) in China a few years ago. The new Peiyang dollars are usually made out of cupronickle and has the same diameter as the real one.

2. 1904 Hupeh/Hubei Tael.

3. This one is completely fake. It's the obverse of a regular 1914 (Republic year 3) Yuan Shikai dollar with a 1916 commem. The reverse is from this coin.

May I ask where you are buying these coins from? The first definitely rings a few alarms since it's one of the more popular fakes, and the last coin just hits it out of the ballpark.

Mdp, I certainly understand why you would ask for help with these, but if you do not want to take the time to learn how to identify, date, and grade these for yourself, I suggest that you do not purchase these. You do not need to learn an entire language in order to do these things. The Krause book actually shows how to date and what the characters on the coins represent. It does take a little legwork, but it is possible to do without learning the language.

The other thing is that NGC values are in no way going to help you unless you are going to purchase these and send them to NGC for grading. Even if you do this, NGC and PCGS values are greatly inflated on their sites and are the high-end of prices that could be realized.

One of the joys of collecting is learning new information.

I'll put them as all fakes. Chances are if one is fake, the rest are fakes.

Rule of thumbs with Chinese coins - if you don't know what you are getting, just don't! How can you tell if it's loaded with lead / arsensic especially when they are known for counterfeiting / adulterating / lead paint etc?

To top it up, I remembered I handled an interesting counterfeit and after I was finished with it, I got a nasty allegric reaction to it. Don't know what it was but it is not a pleasant experience. Can you be assured you will not get it?
