Is the 1985 penny sort of rare? I know what it says on the mintage's, but I keep trying to get that coin out of change I have and that never happens!

No, the 1985 penny is common - you must be just having some bad luck! There are two major varieties of the 1985 penny, blunt 5 and pointed 5, with the latter being the scarcer of the two.

I find plenty of 1985 pennies - but all Blunt 5s!
Do anyone know the population or ratio between blunt and pointed?

From my own experience in roll hunting I estimate a ratio of 300:1 Blunt:Pointed (with a big uncertainty), but I have not counted numbers of 1985 Blunt 5 that I have searched. 300:1 may be a bit on the generous side for finding P5s and could easily be 400:1 because I'm going from memory. I can tell you that I've found two 1985P5 in 16 boxes of pennies. In my experiences this then makes it less common than the 2006 P magnetic (Charlton 66th Ed. reports mintage of 233,000) and more common than the 1965 v4 (P5,LB).

Also keep in mind that the RCM's ARP (Alloy Recovery Program) is continuously reducing the number of older coins in circulation and replacing them with new plated coins.

I have found 2 of the pointed 5 varieties in searching over 25 boxes. This one is quite rare and I have never found one in AU condition. Would love to see one in MS65 condition as it is most lilely a nice looking coin. The one thing I have noticed is the pricing of these fluctuates greatly from seeing them sell from anywhere between 8 and 35 dollars on ebay.

I have also found only two pointed 5 in all my searching.

One cent I have never found is the 2006 P, believe it or not! I have found two 2006 npnl magnetic and a couple of pointed 5 small beads from '65.

To the poster, just ask the bank for a block of pennies. You'll find an '85.

I have also found that the 1985 penny to be a rare circulation find, then again I don't live in Canada, HOWEVER, since the USA State Quarter program in 1999, I have received many Canadian Quarters in change (NYC area)...

My best guess is that it's just circulation. I could be wrong though.

Anyway, I've never seen/heard of any in sets.
