Hi All, My Uncle found a completely blank (both sides and rim) GW coin in a roll he received recently. I am reading on CNN that a couple in Denver found the same and are being told it's worth thousands. There's has "In God We Trust" on the edge, my Uncle's does not, I don't believe. I am trying to help him figure out a value on this. Similar coins on ebay seem to be going for hundreds, not thousands. Does anyone here have any idea of the value or how you would go about finding out? Thanks!

Without the edge, you need to send it to third party grading company to certify it.

If the dollar is missing "in God We Trust", then its not worth thousands. Its estimated that 50,000 coins with out "In God We Trust", left the mint. If the dollar is blank, then you may have the same error that all the news outlets are talking about.

I agree, what made the couples worth so much is because theirs had the edge lettering (which is the last process as far as I know) so it made it through a few quality control people before it ever made it to the place where thry do the edge lettering and then another quality control after they did the edge lettering and it still made it out of the mint. What your uncle has is just a blank planchet with nothing on it what so ever which is a whole lot more common than the one mentioned on CNN and about every other publication and coin forum known to man

Hello wildflower, welcome to the forum!

What you have is known as a blank planchet. A planchet is the metal disc that has the design of the coin struck on it. There are two types- I and II. Type I planchets are perfectly flat. Type II has the initial formation of a rim.

The planchets from the Presidential dollars are the EXACT SAME as the planchets used to make Sacagawea dollars(which are still being minted concurrently with the Prez series). The couple from Ft. Collins found a type II planchet with edge lettering, but no obverse or reverse design. The design of the coin is struck and then the edge lettering is placed on it in a second process. Their example is the only one found so far and it will certainly be rare. The coins from ebay and the national news stories missing "in God We Trust" have the obverse and reverse design but skipped the second step edge lettering. It is estimated that at least 50,000 of those exist.

The "golden dollar" blank planchets seem to be somewhat scarce as Fred Weinberg, a major error dealer, has them for sale for $125(raw) and $300(a certified pair). You will not get rich off of this find but it is a nice thing to just pull out of a roll

Thanks so much for your answers! You have all been very helpful and I really appreciate it. I've learned more in the last 2 days about coins than I ever knew...I need to read up on some of the posts here as it seems that looking for coin errors would be a very interesting hobby (like I don't have enough already). As far as the value goes, he may want to hold onto it, but I'll continue watching the ebay auctions for him.

I am curious has to how they will be able to tell the difference between a Sac Dollar and a G W Dollar Blank other than what I state at the bottom. I read that they weigh the same and are made of the same planchet material.

So I think that when that reward for the first G W Dollar blank with the edge letters incused on the outside rim would be the only true way of telling the diference between the two.
