I am curious what value collectors assign to owning RCM shrink-wrapped rolls (or boxes) of new pennies. I feel compelled to ask because I recently came home with a sealed box of 2011 CPZ pennies from my local branch. I broke the seal to determine if they were CPZ or CPS. Since there is very little information about potential varieties in new coins, what do you do with them? I see a few scenarios:

1. Keep them. It's only $25 and takes up little room. Maybe a variety is discovered and you can search for it. Perhaps you're good at grading and can pick out MS-67 coins for certification. Maybe they'll increase in value over the years (doubtful).

2. Flip them. ebay sellers currently offer everything from individual coins, to whole rolls, to whole boxes for sale. It seems there are buyers willing to pay a little higher than FV.

3. Keep a few rolls, flip the rest.

I'm interested in anyone's opinions, whether buyer, seller, or collector. Thanks!

I doubt you will make much selling them raw on ebay. Shipping is too punitive.

I would open five rolls, pick out the 10 best and consider them for certification. Check the rest with a magnet and look for varieties.

If your ten best work out at ICCS, sell the ones you don't want, then repeat and certify another 10.

I got one roll of CPZ 2011 cents--I actually got it for free from an ebay seller who sold me a bunch of rolls of 1988 cents (where MS65s used to be kind of scarce.....less so now....my search of rolls of 1988s for MS66s probably unleashed 15 MS65s to the market).

The 2011 roll was a lovely roll. I ended up with 3 ICCS MS67s and 2 MS66s. The MS66s were barely breakeven after ebay fees and ICCS costs. The MS67s are probably worth $30 to $40. I only have my keeper left now.

I don't think that the difference is material. I don't think common grade coins of either sort will ever have value. All that matters are MS67+s or errors.

I got my box by accident. I was suppose to get a box of 2012 and they sent me 2011 Magnetic(CPS). Never thought much about it until now. The Charlton Catalogue says that the 2011 CPS were N.I.I meaning not issued for circulation and only found in sets from RCM.....How come I have a full box of them if they were not meant for circulation?

While roll hunting (2500 pennies) I only found 15 magnetic ones and 3 magnetic.
Last year, I also hunted 2500 pennies in November and pulled only 1 magnetic penny 2011, which now turns out to be the most common.
My point is: We have to wait for the report... Once you open these rolls, you can't stuck them back. If you keep them in the roll, everone will know that they are uncirculated and untouched. If you find major scratches on most of the pennies you pull out, others would consider it as circulated undoutedly. I would wait for the report to see if it's best to keep them in rolls or open them.

@Smallcentguy: Thanks for the suggestion. Seems like a reasonable strategy from someone who has done this before! I have seen whole boxes actually selling for 4x FV + $25 to ship within Canada. Some sellers are able to move whole boxes, just not sure what demographic of collector is paying for them at such a markup.

@rmc: The 2011 mint report gives mintage of 301,400,000 CPZ pennies in 2011 and 361,350,000 for CPS. It would seem both are pretty much equally common.

My initial question had little to do with the monetary value of the box or the intact rolls themselves, and more to do with collector potential. It was dumb luck that I ended up with this box; I was curious what other people would do in my situation, such as the idea outlined by Smallcentguy. The real question is whether I can tell MS-65 from MS-67. It's time I learned :)

I do some roll hunting and have received full mint boxes. I have a full box of 2008, 2010, and 2011 cents. For the sake of 25 bucks, I just saved the boxes. They won't be worth anything in my lifetime but perhaps to my children or grandchildren.
