New here and trying to figure out who the Barber people are. I know there has to be a few. I saw Treashunt, so I know there is at least one. You can check out my certified ones here http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/pub...spx?s=103579. I also collect them in full rimmed G/VG.

Very impressive so far. I see your going for a mid-grade set. That keeps it somewhat within the realm of affordability.

Yes, the keyword is somewhat. I prefer the look of dirty VF's over anything else.

Man oh man is that a big series, 218 coins by my count. Great looking set so far. How long have you been working on your set?

The 02-S Half is the one I have owned the longest. I bought it in August last year, so I would say about a year. I've gone through different phases of collecting these things and have bought and sold quite a few. I'm on the track I want to be on now. Definitely have refined my taste and have been a lot pickier in my VF's.

I had managed to get quite a few of the Barber halves from junk bin searching, but there are no coin shops around here for me to continue that. I even managed to get some of the harder coins that way, 1897s, 1904s, 1914 etc

I would classify your collection as "great patina", not dirty. You have done well on the first twenty and I hope you share pics as you work on acquiring the next 201. I also don't think it will be long til matthewvincent chimes in.

Wait. Hold on. Did I hear someone asking if there are any other Barber Collectors here?
I just got back from Manchester, New Hampshire last night where I helped staff the Barber Coin Collectors' Society club table.
I am a contributing editor of the BCCS quarterly Journal.
Our web site is at:

When I return to normalcy [ I had a blast this weekend! ] I'll be happy to speak to you at length.

One thing I like about the Barbers is even when they get worn down they still look pretty good. Take the Seated Liberty series once they get worn down her head gets pretty fugly and becomes almost a blob. To me a VG Barber looks better than a VF Seated Liberty. Problem is they are so darn expensive since they were a workhorse coin.

Add me to the list of Barber collectors.
I have all but a couple of the dimes, I'm around 12 shy of having the quarter set done and I just started picking up some halves.

Sweet, there are a bunch here!
matthewvincent, I am member of the BCCS. I have threatened many times to come to the Baltimore Whitman meetings, but there always seems to be something I need to do that Friday afternoon that they hold them. I am going to try to make an effort to make the November one.
