I searched the forum and couldnt find anything that specific on the topic, so I guess I'm starting my own. I'm starting a Kennedy Dansco album with proofs and am curious how people obtain the SMS coins. From what I've read, you cant really tell the difference between an SMS and a business strike. I dont really trust people on ebay selling non-slabbed SMS coins. Additionally, I've heard the TPG's have been known to screw it up. Is the best way to just break opened an SMS set? Please let me know how you have done it or any suggestions you might have. I guess the safe way would be buying the slabbed cameo versions but that can get pricey.

For me, when I want SMS coins, I go to coin shops/shows and try to look through as many SMS sets as possible and find one that has the best looking coins. Buy that set and bust it open for albums.
When looking through them always be on the look out for cameo coins.
Buying the sets, many times, can be cheaper than buying just one coin.

I'm only needing half dollars at the moment. If I purchased the whole SMS set, what do I do with the rest of the coins?

Which SMS strikes are you referring to? The 1965-67 SMS strikes are easily distinguishable versus business strikes, they featured mirrored surfaces, like proofs, but were not designated as such. The more modern SMS strikes are frosty/satiny ( is that a word?)...are they not?

I'm referring to 1965-1967. From what I've seen on ebay, most of them arent THAT mirrored.

A lot of the ones that are mirrored have been slabbed, what you see on ebay is (usually) the bottom of the barrel. Just keep an eye out and sooner or later you'll find the gem your looking for.

You can easily tell SMS coins from business strikes. They are much more mirrored and shiny. I got a pretty nice package of 65-67 SMS Kennedys off of ebay. Paid $30 bucks for them. You can pay a lot for slabbed SMS coins, especially the condition rare cameo coins.

The topic of being able to tell the difference between SMS coins and Business struck coins has been touched upon, I remember being told "You could not" tell them from one another.... I believe any Numismatist having been around, could easily tell the coins apart, being the SMS coins are proof-like with their close to mirror finish, Some having a Sweet Cameo appearence, compared to any business struck coin!!! Just my Opinion.......PS, Buy the sets...... :)

Quote: I'm only needing half dollars at the moment. If I purchased the whole SMS set, what do I do with the rest of the coins? Just 2X2 the other coins up and boxed them. If you collect long enough, you may do all the sets.

I have seen many business strikes that were as nice as the SMS. A lot of times it is very difficult to tell. Regardless, your best bet is to do exactly what GR58 said.
