Post 82 Lincoln cents deteriorate rapidly. Is similar deterioration/ugly coloration bound to occur in a slabbed zincoln over time? I like the 1983 DDR but I'm not sure if its a good move due to aforementioned concerns.

I think the risk of that happening depends on whether the thin copper jacket is compromised. Seems to me that's its only layer of defense.

The days of slabbing "Zilcolns" may rapidly be becoming extinct.

As long as your coins are well protected from air and humidity, they will last essentially forever.

Actually, now that the series has been discontinued, we'll see more and more Zincolns in slabs.

I took the literal road about Quote: now that the series has been discontinued I had forgotten that the LMC was replaced by the shield and was thinking that the US was following in the footsteps of Canada. I too was wondering when the extinction order went out until you had posted the clarification. Now I understand.

Most slabbed zincolns should be safe. But I'd be wary of buying many with discontinuities in the copper sheathing. These might be as insignificant as bubbles or as serious as the copper being ripped off the reverse lettering on '89-D mint set coins. Most of the slabbed coins and even those with plating issues should be good for decades but any sort of poor storage and plating problem will quickly result in serious damage. The quality of the pennies in circulation is just appaling. As one penny is eaten away they mint a new one at a cost of about Three Cents to replace it. It's an embarrassment in the here and now but future generations will think we are completely insane.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
