Hello, Jim From Reno here. In Cleaning out a mother-in-laws closet we came across some interesting coins and paper. The first being an 1878 Twenty Cent Piece in a (plastic cover) and a 1863 .25 paper currency. Anyone have any idea of worth. I'm new to this and just started researching last night on these two items, there are others, but these looked to be ?of value. Thanks for your help in advance. Edited by justjim 09/17/2012 5:30 pm

The 1878 Twenty Cents is a proof only issue with just 600 minted and if genuine could potentially be worth thousands. The other sounds like it could be a piece of fractional currency. If you can post some pictures of the items, it would make it a lot easier for us to assist you.

oh boy, that might be a winner... I'm going VF30/35 on the coin
HA.com has a July 2012 Proof going for under $3,000 so I am not sure what to value your coin at...I have a wholesale sheet here that puts it roughly at $2000 but I have to tell you that if, as a buyer, I can own a certified proof (proof equaling a shiny mirror unscathed version) for less than a thousand more, it becomes no question to spend a few more dollars...
I would send to a grading service via a local dealer, DO NOT commit to selling the dealer a thing, just request it be sent to PCGS or NGC for grading...its worth the less than $50 it will cost you to authenticate it and have it officially graded...visit the web sites of the acronyms provided and seek your local dealer...

and congratulations, welcome...who knows, maybe you'll hold onto it, which I suggest, and start collecting...

I would suggest ANACS to grade and authenticate it. That way you can send it in directly and dont have to deal with anyone else. AND its cheaper. Regardless, that coin MUST be sent in to make sure of its authenticity. Kind of leery myself.

The fractional currency you have is the third issue with the bust of William P. Fessenden signed by Colby and Spinner. I believe he was the last person to be put on a note that was still living at the time. There are a few on ebay now if you want to get a value of them.

to CCF Nice 20 cent piece! Looking at Numismedia it looks like you have a coin that has some serious value.

Yea I would send it to PCGS, you could have scored with this piece, if it is authentic. But you have to get it graded, please post results!

The only 1878 20 center on Heritage was in Proof-65 Cameo condition, and sold for $13,800. There are 6 in this grade, with 8 finer. If authentic, you probably have the poorest known condition... which should bring somewhat of a premium, but not trump historical values. Just a guess.
