Thats a nice coin. I must say also I'm liking the photos rather than the scans. They show up the beauty of the coin much better. Is this coin out of the big bulk lot from ebay?

Outstanding tray bit! From the pictures I can't find anything wrong with it. This date, in all denominations, always has weak detail around Lizzie's ear. That problem was later fixed, with the re cutting of the master die for later dates.
She also seems to be bare shouldered, suggesting that there may be few clothes elsewhere. That provided another reason to re cut the master die.
However, if you look VERY closely, there is a barely visible hemline at the bottom of the neck, and a more obvious vertical fold behind in Lizzie's clothing, behind her shoulder.
I guess that Mary Gillick may have copped a slight rap over the knuckles for that slight negligence!

I quite like the bare shouldered look It makes for a more "Classical " looking bust. In 1954 the Queen was a beautiful young woman, So why not show a bit of shoulder. I think Mary Gillick got it right first time

Quote:Is this coin out of the big bulk lot from ebay? I just checked out that lot under my usb gizmo. A couple of dozen MS coins No rare dates and about a dozen die cracks. You can't win all the time but another 360 of these little beauties added to the hoard doesn't hurt

Looks nice, I'd say MS64. It's a very tough coin in that grade, most of the raw 'Unc's on the market are just doctored EFs due to the date being typically well struck up and due to the scarcity of genuine UNCs.

Thank's for that Walter I bought this last year and upgraded a heap of my 3d,6d and shillings at melt prices from a bulk lot. I spotted the 54 in the pic on the listing and would have bid heaps more just to get this particular coin. I have bought a few other lots on ebay of "Shiny " coins and most of them turn out to be cleaned or favorably photographed But this particular lot turned out to be 90% ms coins Call me crazy I know I can get great coins and have from sites like yours But I just LOVE the thrill of the hunt. It's a bit like fishing to me, Some days you spend a heap of cash on bait and fuel and come home with nothing. Then there are the days when it all comes together and you get that trophy fish Same with me with coins, I would rather catch my own fish than buy it at the fish market

Quote: Doctored how? Usually dipped or otherwise cleaned to remove the discolouration normally associated with wear. Pairing that with their usual strong strike is enough to convince newbies that the coin is UNC. You can differentiate true UNCs with doctored UNCs by the presence of natural lustre (note that it's sometimes in the form of a deep mirror with this issue), if lustre is broken (usually in the obverse fields and flat areas of the bust), the coin is worn and certainly not UNC.

I and I have no doubt the majority of us collectors at one stage or another have been duped by this dipping practice, As you stated if the fields on the lustre are weak/Look weird then it ain't MS but are doctored EF coins.
