So... is this like one of those square watermelons that you can get in Japan? Is that what's going on here?

If you think finding the rare square Indian Head cents is hard. Try finding the albums to hold them!

If you check on the sellers "ME" page, you'll see she may know something about antiques, but nothing about coins. She also gives her email address to contact her, and has been on ebay less than a month...
Should I (or anyone else here) send her a email and explain that what she is selling is a damaged coin...
I use this forum to learn what I don't know and share what I do know with others, and maybe email her advising if she wants to sell coins to the public, she should join CCF and ask questions first...

I just sent the seller the following email message (below)...

Laura,

I have been involved in numismatics (coins & currency) for some 50 years now (since I was 9 years old) and am advising you that your 1891 square Indian Head cent you have listed on ebay is nothing more than a damaged coin, as there was never a square one cent piece...

Below is a link to a website you may want to check out, and possibly join (no membership fees) to learn about coins and currency...

I found this site last year and wished there was something like this 30 years ago instead of hitting the books every time I had a question on coins...

On that website my user name is; Broken_Coin that I chose when my granddaughter viewed my large error coin collection... My granddaughter looked up at me and said "WOW, grandpa, look at all the broken coins you have" , and from that point on I have been using that name in coin forums...

http://www.coincommunity.com/

I think you will like this site, and would recommend it if you plan on selling coins on ebay to avoid negative feedback...

Take Care,

Vernon Peterson aka Broken_Coin

p/s ~ please reply when you receive this message so I know the email address is correct...

Broken-Coin, I sent her a heads-up via the "ask seller a question" button and suggested she find a local jeweler who can make it into a wire-wrapped pendant. She'll have better luck selling it that way, I think.

Since she is into jewelry, that was a excellent idea... If she would have been a long time seller on ebay I would have just ignored her listing, but seeing she is new to ebay and selling other items, I thought the least we can do is try and educate her as we do others that post here...

(all bets are off if she doesn't remove the listing as she now knows it's not a real error coin)

I'd guess this was once set in a piece of jewelery. Maybe a ring or pendant.

Looks like a perfectly authentic 1891 IHC--- that was damaged by running it through some sort of machine from the side to reshape it into a square.

Yeah, I cruise ebay quite a bit and you can find several "error" coins that aren't really errors... but rather people MAKING it an error.

I've seen listings where the seller claims a hole is an error. If so, I've got a prime error collection.

I sent this over to the CCW but I know what they will say. Thought I'd give them a laugh though.

Again, thank you for your report. We appreciate your help in keeping ebay a safe and reputable forum to conduct business.
