I am a little miffed right now and I hope that I don't say something stupid. I arranged a sale of a Capped Bust Half Dime; "I'll remove the product listing from our website now and hold the coin pending receipt of your payment. I'll also prepare an invoice and email a copy to you--look for it in your inbox sometime in the next hour. If you have any questions or if I can be of further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thank you, we look forward to doing business with you!" (09:42 CST). Then at 09:49 CST, I receive an email stating that "I'm very sorry but when I went to pull this item, I learned that it sold in another venue just 30 minutes ago, so it is no longer available. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."I simply replied "This is not good." Has this ever happened to you? It's just "one of those days". Edited by oih82w8 09/21/2012 11:23 am

Just one of the reasons I hate buying on line anywhere. I'll take a coin show, flea market, garage/yard sale anytime. No matter what, at those places once you pick it up, unless you put it back down, no one can do that. At shows though, I've made the mistake of putting something down I wanted. And POOF, guy next to me grabbed it.

That's quite upsetting. :-(
I'd feel gypped and suspect some sort of foul play, but I'd force myself to balance that with the fact that mistakes happen. It still stings.

Almost happened to me once, but the scene played out like this: Me: "This is nice." [Place it to the side to start a "consideration pile".] Other guy: [Swoops in and picks it up.] "That *is* nice!" [Turns to the dealer.] "How much?" Me: [Still looking through the pile.] "It's a counterfeit." Other guy: "What?" Dealer: [Takes a closer look and raises his eyebrows in surprise.] "Well, would you look at that..." [Hands it back to Other Guy.] Other guy: "Forget that." [Drops it and swoops out.] Me: [To dealer with a big grin.] "I'll take it anyways. How much?" Dealer: How much? [He chuckles.] It's yours. Have fun. Score one for counterfeit collectors. :-)

To the OP, this happens frequently as if this was a major site, they also may be doing a show and sometimes bring coins they are selling online at shows.

B&M stores are not really an option in my area, there is one that I know of that has a minuscule amount of slabbed inventory and another store turned into a buying/selling precious metals "jewelry store".
This was not an auction (although I have been there many, many times) this was a buy it outright store.
I am sure that it happens more times that I realize...just blowing off steam.

My coworker had this happen to him through an online ad for a dog. He even took his 4 year old daughter down to meet the dog, the guy confirmed over the phone, they arrive, and as the kid is playing with the dog the seller tells my coworker he just got a text that his girlfriend had already sold the dog to someone else and he was just now getting that text.
Sucks when it happens. =(

Months ago I ordered from an online dealer, when I placed the order they were at a show. The coin sold at the show, and they cancelled the order and refunded the payment. I recently ordered from the same dealer, when I placed the order they were at another show. The coin didn't sell at the show, so it came in the mail yesterday.

Not a coin story but I was at a flea market and a dealer was selling pocket watches. I was miffed because I got there just after he put them out. One guy grabbed all but one. Another guy managed to get one out of the group. While he was examining the watch, the ohter customer yanked the watch right out of his hands and told him "I'm buying this one too." I would have went one upside his head. You don't do that at a flea market or any other venue. Unless of course it an 1893S Morgan. Just kidding. You can get hurt doing stuff like that. I've seen guys fight over flea market stuff. People get killed for the stupidest reasons. A pocket watch aint worth dying for.

I suppose online there is nothing that you can do. At a show or shop if I find a coin I want I tell the dealer and get them to put it in a pile. That was its reserved for you and any prying eyes cant nab it whilst its in the maybe pile.

A few years back I won an auction on ebay. I made payment within 24 hours and received an email from the seller telling me that they had to refund my money. It appears that they had double listed the coin and had already sent it to another buyer. The funny thing was that the second auction had ended several hours after my auction and the coin had sold for more money in that auction.

Often I have had the winning bid on ebay in the last few seconds only to have it auto bidded by someone else. The one that really ticked me off was one coin that was won for an exceptionally low price, (well under my actual bid) that mysteriously disappeared in the mail and the seller refunded my full amount including postage after my inquiry immediately without question.
