I am new to this forum, and I wanted to get everyone's opinion about a dollar crash scenario event. Would it not be better to be holding old 90% silver coins as opposed to silver eagles or bullion bars, as the ordinary person out there that you may want to barter with might not recognize new bullion coins and be fearful of accepting them, whereas old quarters, halves and dimes would be recognizable? What are your thoughts?

My honest opinion...if this comes to pass....and I mean full on meltdown....people won't give a darn about gold or silver...it will be a bullets and seeds economy.

But there always has been some kind of money used....sea shells, beads, tulip bulbs. What will we use to barter with?

If that were to happen silver coins would be the best like ASEs. Not everyone knows that there used to be silver in circulated coins. Bullion bars and rounds people may or may not trust and with bars the sheer volume (since most are more than an OZ) will make a transaction difficult or make you over pay knowing you have a lot of silver or as a fee for how hard it will be for them to use it

Barter is exactly what it is...I have something you need ( say seeds to grow food ) and you have something I need ( say a horse to pull my plow ). We then negociate how many seeds for the horse....precious metals don't get you what you need right then and there. In a complete meltdown scenario you will be bartering for daily needs. Society needs to be intact and functional before "representative bartering" i.e. coins, notes, etc... will have any desirability.

Shooting is one of my better attributes, and I know a lot about farming......I was raised on a farm, but hated it the whole time.....would rather have been shooting squirrels or playing baseball.

But to your point..let's pretend it is in a SIATHTF, "IAT" meaning "is about to" where society isn't in shambles quite yet, I think it is imperative you have all forms so that you can have fractional currency to trade for smaller items. Coins like ASEs along with pre-65 coins will both have their place.

Thanks unholyroller, that's what I have been thinking......have something to barter with that has an actual value......a value that most will be able to recognize. I'm not sure if my local seed store proprietor would recognize a gold philharmonic for what it was worth.

Whether or not the the 7-11 will take silver for cigars will be the least of your worries if big stuff hits the big fan.

All kidding aside....heirloom seeds ( as in seeds that will actually produce food with seeds that can be saved and planted next year ) are definitely a worthy investment for people desire them even today but will have significantly more value should the proverbial excriment hit the air movement device.

wouldn't the best time to stockpile PM's be during this scenario?
The stuff that's getting sprayed from the fan needs to settle before PM's are worth anything again.
If I have a gallon of water or bag of seed or medical supplies and you have a roll of Eagles, who do you think has the upperhand in the trade?
Water, non perishable foods, gas, guns, medical supplies...having those items will allow you to trade for large amounts of PM's if it happends.
OT: If I were stockpiling for a this scenario, I would say bars and .999 would be the way to go. Wouldn't 90% need to be refined before use? Can't imagine too many places that would be able to do that after a major situation.

Why would it need to be refined? It is mostly just a medium of exchange, and not really likely to be used as anything else.

If you're just using it as a medium of exchange, why stockpile the silver versions?
