Same reason it was used for coinage in the 19th century.

You're going to spend $12 now for a Franklin half that you're going to use for 50 cents after a collapse? They used silver in the 19th century because the silver content was worth less than the face value of the money.

Correct..and 90% silver makes for good coins...durable, relatively rare, easy to make coins from, doesn't rust or corrode....and yes...intrinsic value from the silver gave the psychological perception of value. When it came down to it though...silver was just a logical choice to make coins from because of its physical properties and not much else. Then when the day came where the silver was worth more than face value...we HAD to make them out of something else otherwise the coins would not circulate and there by bring commerce to a screeching hault. Yes...silver indeed has intrinsic value...which is also derived from its physical properties which includes making coins.....your head can spin trying to think through that logic.

Thanks, Silverhawk,I picked the name "cashdash" about 10 years ago when I was starting to accumlate silver and gold and figured I needed to make my trip a "dash" and not a jog. I'm now 70 and glad I started when I did.

If the govt. hadn't been manipulating silver for the past few years we'd both be better off. I started by buying "rare" coinage, thinking it would grow faster than bullion. Maybe it has, and then again, maybe it hasn't.

You want a 500 oz silver bar, preferably JM, incase you need to use it as a weapon.

Dash for the cash is what I was thinking of, what show is it I watch that phrase is used? Oh I know Ice Road Truckers, lol! What a pile of steaming stuff that show is, lol....
We have supplies, lets take them from point A to point B an hope for a back haul an more money, lol. The ice will crack a bit along both ways and we may get too close as we pass another truck on the ice road with only about 18 feet to spare between us, lol....
No in all seriousness that is a dangerous job, I wont be doing it and hope those guys are converting that History channel chez into G @ S to stay on subject....

It doesn't matter how much gold or silver in any form that you have in this scenerio, The PMs are what are going to hold you up above those that dont have it after when things calm down. JMHO.

I believe what was said above - in a true apocalyptic scenario (a la Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome type stuff), PMs will be immaterial. Food, weapons and ammo will be the commodities of value. In a post-apocalypse scenario where society is starting to reorganize and rebuild, PMs will (hopefully) start to regain their former value - at least at some level to some degree. If you want to really prepare for a real apocalyptic scene you'll need good assault rifles and combat pistols, a MAJOR pile of ammo, another MAJOR pile of that survivalist prepackaged food with a shelf life that's measured in atomic half-life time frames and a home that the savages can't break into. Concerns about what type/form of PMs will be most desirable are somewhere between secondary and superfluous. If you're worried about a baby pseudo-apocalyptse where everybody stays polite and orderly, you'd probably be good to go with a couple baseball bats, a buried stash of ASEs and a copy of Emily Post's latest guidebook.

Hm, I see both forms of bullion being helpful for trade(s). .999 Bars for industrial big trades (like a horse) & 90% / 1 oz rounds etc for day to day transactions to help....and yes, guns / ammo / land (you own) / seeds etc are all up there.

@ Tripcoins....... Imagine all chaos, Everyone is trying to hurt you or kill you for your food....You gonna take 10oz of silver and give them 1 of the 4 boxes of ammo you got left? You have 10 gals of water...all you can manage to carry with you....gonna take 100oz engelhard bar for a ltr of it? Nope. Well I know for sure that I wont. But when things start to reorganize and people stop trying to kill you, then maybe yeh, trade silver for a horse or something. Hence why I said it would put you in a good position after the fact.

samsnate - valid points. I also imagine that there are other folks who would be equipped, prepped, ready to rock n roll should it happen. (like us). And they can afford to do the same in return. Folks who were one step ahead. Very far and few between. After the fact will apply to a lot of people should that scenario arise.
The horse and silver thing would be interesting and would probably end up being a transaction with someone on the forums...my vote is for Silverhawk lol.
