In a true apolcalyptic scenario priorities are: Primary Priorities(necessities) Food, water, shelter, guns Secondary Priorities(semi neccesities and mediums of trade) gas, liqueur, smokes, seeds Tertiary(medians of trade, miscellaneous) silver, gold, tools, toilet paper, fabric, etc. these are my opinions, but if anyone has any other ideas feel free to comment *** Edited by staff to remove non-family friendly initialism ***

I do think silver and money will have its place eventually, but initially will be highly overrated in terms of its usefulness. People wont give up food or water for it not knowing if theyll be able to replace it. Id almost go as far to saw a large hoard would do more harm then good with the space it would take up and the engery required to move it. A large ammo hoard you could at least turn into food and have for protection where at first the money wont do any good. After thinking about it I have to say I agree that right after it happened it probably would be easy to get large amounts of silver while giving up minimal amounts of goods. The meat from one deer could probably fetch you 100s of ounces from people who are hungry and have nothing else

Wow, I wish I could show you guys my bunker. It holds my vault, food storage, water storage, and most importantly guns an ammunition. It is an old bomb shelter we have on one of our rental properties near my C-Store so I figure I have enough food in there to last my family up to a year and have been adding water by the case every single week, prob at 500 gallons. The biggest thing I am lacking now IMHO is ammunition. I have many weapons but not near enough ammunition for a hostile apocalypse type situation. I am thinking of picking up a couple .22 cal pistols and rifles because the ammunition is so cheap and readily accessible.

If a crash happens I wish you could show me your bunker as well lol. In all seriousness a .22 rifle isn't a bad pick up by any means you can get a ton of ammo for it real cheap and its one of the more popular ammos out there if you needed to find more at some point. Ammo prices are terrible right now but like silver it pays to buy in bulk. Theres some pretty good deals on websites if you look around enough and as long as you arent just ordering a box or two shipping isn't bad. Cheaper than most stores at least

the best silver to hold during this situation is in form of bullets ... silver bullets ... Don't know if one can order silver gun, tank, air jet ... ))
One thing for sure, if you are expecting a collpase invest in a) land b) community of people around this land c) food d) some tools e) educate yourself into some skills that would be useful f) PM (not much) g) weapons (from gun up to WMD - whichever you can afford) plus ammunition. All done not in order, just to let you know that PM in this situation wouldn't help much.

Wow, this has been incredibly interesting reading all the comments from different folks. I'm beginning to think it might be a little of all of these points of view. I'm sure it's different according to your environment.......city dwellers, as opposed to country folk. I am inclined to buy into the ammo thing.......22 cal. sure is light to carry, cheap to buy, and small to hide......and will put meat on the table as well as change a zombie's mind about trying to steal turnips from your garden spot. Here's hoping things don't get that far......but here's also hoping we'll be prepared if it does.

Yeah, but remember it's a BYOS party (bring your own supplies) or you might find yourself at the wrong end of one of his new .22 rifles.

I'm stocked on food, water, guns, ammo, shelter and I have a remote piece of land that would be a bugout location. What I am missing are things like heirloom seeds, canning supplies, gasoline and solar energy.
The buying of guns, ammo and silver are the fun things to buy. They take up the majority of my expendable income.

One thing to remember if going for .22 though is that rigging body armor for it is not all that hard since the penetrating power is on the weak side.

Good point nod. Definitely wouldnt recommend it as a primary weapon, but a solid back up weapon and would be great for hunting small animals and conserving the bigger rounds

the good thing about a .22 though is that the ammunition is very standard, so if you ever run out, there is good chance you could acquire some more.

Actually....22lr is notoriously a good penetrator and will actually defeat some body armors that will still stop other handgun rounds! This comes from first hand experimentation not an urban myth! 22lr and especially 22 magnum are nasty little buggers!

In a apocalyptic scenario I have the weapons, skills, small panty of food, easily defendable remote land to grow continuous food supply, nearby stream with a darn I could easily add hydro power turbine to for electric power for food storage and security lights, community of people who need and also give support, secondary I have PMs to buy livestock and work animals, if I can't pick them up along with another farm and farmer on the way in. I'm not really setting up for a doomsday situation it just comes along with growing up half red neck with family who made sure I had a general knowledge of fishing, crabbing, shooting and common sense.

Quote:You're going to spend $12 now for a Franklin half that you're going to use for 50 cents after it happens? Yes, because after the situation has occurred and the dust has settled, that silver $0.50 piece is likely to be a full day's wage. As for the original question, I favor US 90% silver coins for their small size and most people either recognize them for what they are or will very soon after it happens. I also like the bigger 1-oz. silver rounds, such as ASEs and Maples, and bars up to 10-oz. in size for large purchases. I don't have any gold but if I were to buy some, I would probably get the 1/4 and 1/2 oz. sizes of Maples and AGEs. Quote: Wow, I wish I could show you guys my bunker. It holds my vault, food storage, water storage, and most importantly guns an ammunition. Well, then, do so! I'd love to see that. Just show us the inside so as to not compromise your opsec. If you don't wanna "go public", then how about a PM? I agree that ammo is a terrific barter and survivor commodity. It is rising in cost almost as fast as is silver, so is not a bad long-term holding. It is also quite useful at times. Gotta like the .22 rim-fire cartridge. I have a .22 auto-loader that I got from my Mom when my Dad passed away back in the 1980s. It's very reliable, easy to shoot, and is accurate out to about 75 yards. It doesn't have a lot of power but it is an excellent small game getter and the ammo is very cheap.
