So I Attributed my beautiful 1878-s and it makes the Dragon scale VAM 36! Pretty exciting! The coin is high MS and my photographs of it resemble the sun...nothing but light/glare. Considering the amount of time I'm spending on trying to " get" coin photography, it would be way quicker for me to draw a detailed sketch...except I'm even worse at drawing. Anyway I wish I could take a picture to show you guys. it is pretty cool! Thanks for all of your help . Seated Nut, I was determined to identify a VAM today, Super DDave, if you read this, I'd love any instruction in photography!

That is a great Vam-type and in MS semi PL it is over the top. Take your photos with a little less light and a bit away from the coin ...then crop into it and re-size it.

That's a nice variety. Did you check the sub-varieties Vams 36-A and 36-B?

Kelly, when I saw that rmpsrpms (Ray) had taken an interest in your situation, I chose to sit and watch. When Ray starts talking about photography, darn few have the right to interrupt and I ain't one of them. Time for you to throw a couple of images into that thread and rest assured, I'm reading it and if I find something to add, I will.

Seated Nut, I am working off of VAM World and do not see anything about 36A or 36B. I'm thinking about ordering a few books. Any that are geared to a beginner with plenty of circulated Morgans to go through? SSuper DDave, I'll put some up today.

Kellyk,
Vamworld lists the 36A and 36B separately ... just below the 36 listing. Both have the same reverse die and unique obverse characteristics. The 36A has a die gouge in the wheat leaves and the 36B has a die crack through the 'E' in E PLURIBUS UNUM. Rarity-wise the 36 is the most common, then the 36B and the 36A is the least common.

Seated Nut and others, Thanks for asking about 36a and 36b. I checked tonight and it is a 36B. So I'm curious. The coin is raw but the previous owner has stated ms 65 and the guy who was with me when I bought them is an experienced collector of 30+ years. He said these coins were the most beautiful he had ever seen. ( yes, I bought all of them!). Anyway the notes on VAM World said PCGS and NGC won't attribute this VAM but ANACs does. As I am a new collector and a new Vammer, do I go for the better grading company or the VAM recognition? Also, is attribute the correct verb to use in thie previous sentence? I'm never sure when I write it.

Kellyk,
Attribute is the correct verb. Congrats if the coin is indeed a 65. If you could get some decent pics up here we could also offer our opinions.
I would personally go with ANACs if you desire to have it professionally graded and attributed. I don't use NGC for any attributions and only use PCGS if the coin is stellar and is a part of their Registry program (see PCGS registry for complete list). These are predominantly Top 100, Hot 50, Hitlist 40, 8TF, etc.). If they don't offer attribution, it isn't part of their Registry.

Pictures soon! I need to borrow a tripod as mine is missing the mount plate and the one I ordered is too big. I had to take a break from this photography of coins as I was so frustrated by it ,that I wanted to throw it out a 7th floor window. The only reason I did not was it is not my equipment!
