With the Canadian gov't aggressively culling older coins from circulation, it will soon be impossible to get them in change.
I believe this was brought up recently in CCN.
How do you feel this will impact coin collecting?

I have removed 2500 '81 and older nickels and 20000 copper pennies from circulation sold for 1.5x face value this summer. Lots of people doing this makes coins harder to find in change. Majority of these coins are worn and damaged anyhow.

I'm doing pretty much the same thing as BmOney, trying to save as many as possible from the smelter, especially pennies, as time is running out fast...

I just finished a bag of 6000 pennies and I didnt find one pointed 5 in them. I am a bit disgusted but the seal was of the bag and they may have been checked before.I was only looking for points and nothing else although occasionally I checked for rotations and found a few. I will sell them for 2 cents each but delivery will take away any profit from the sale for sure. Some are spotted but a lot are nice.

@Senex - I think it will affect CRH sooner than most aspects/methods of collecting. We could probably draw some pretty accurate analogues from when silver was actively being removed from circulation. Existing collectors will have to adjust their methods according to what works. If this means (before pennies aren't circulating anymore) that the only pennies I get in a box from the bank are 1997 and newer, I might re-think if it's worth my time to go through them. I think the next generation of collectors who start in a plated-steel circulation environment will probably get into collecting for different reasons than we did.

@doctorman1941 - Which pointed 5, 1965 or 1985? Was this a mint bag of only one date? If so, it could be that they were simply bagged during a time in production when they were using only the blunt 5 reverse die(s).

Does anyone save other denominations of older coins as well?
I save 1968,1969 of dimes and quarters, and other oddities ie. 1970, 1980 dimes.
Are we going to see the dimes and quarters of the 70's and 80's vanish?

Coins I (would) rescue solely based on date:

Pennies: 1965 and older, 1967
Nickels: 1965 and older, 1967, 1970, 1977, 1990, 1996 (these last three I might discontinue)
Dimes: silver, 1970
Quarters: silver, 1970, 1973, 1991

Some of these that I save must simply be out of habit; it isn't because they're valuable.

Don't worry guys, in Finland gov't has withrawn three coin series during the last 50 years and there are still endless piles of old coins everywhere around. I see it is a good thing that older coins get recycled and due to melting the rest may have some value in the future.

laurette bust I guess they were all from the same die because you would find one 1965 pointed 5.I actually purchased two mint bags from a seller in New York and my brother in law has one and he did not find any as well but only checked half and than gave up.

Pretty much. I check 1990 nickels for the BB variety, but now I've been saving all of them since reading someone else's post about how there is a progression of BB types made through successive die polishing.

@doctorman1941 - Did you find a mix of small beads / large beads, or only one of those two obverses?
