I have just started getting into numismatic coins and learned so much over the past couple months. I have been buying the ATB 5 oz series coins when they hit $205 instead of $275, just ordered my volcano yesterday. I know they are bullion pieces and are basically the value of the silver they hold, however is it worth it to collect these though? I like the designs and how big they are, I just don't know whether it's worth it to keep going. I have all the ATB 5 oz except yellowstone as of right now and think it is a great series, however, not sure if it is worth it from all the rumors on the mint cancelling the series. I am hoping to keep these around till I am older and give them to my daughter when I become elderly (22 right now). Opinions for a new(ish) numismatist?

Thanks for the reply and welcome. I do love the coins, the designs are great. I just don't think they will be above melting price come lets say the year 2040, the 5 coins from 2010 might be as they are low mintage and first in series, but nothing past that. Opinions on this?

Why? Do you think you are going to stop liking the designs or the fact that they are big? If you like them they are worth collecting, assuming you can afford to do so.

If you are really asking should I buy these in the hope that eventually they will be worth a big premium I'd say you are not collecting you are speculating. In that case I'd say my crystal ball is not working, but I don't hold a lot of hope for them.

I love the designs, I think it is more so me asking, well I paid $205 for them from the mint and in 30 years will they be worth more or less, or even have any numismatic value at all. I will probably keep collecting them because the designs are great, and like you and others stated, if I like them then collect them.

My crystal ball is on the fritz, so I can't predict the future right now!
But I do think that by 2040 the price of silver will be considerably higher than now.

Dang I wish I even had a crystal ball! Let me ask you guys this since you guys are probably more experienced and I am a newbie. How do you guys stay on top of the mintage, what a good investment vs bad(such as ATB),what coins are coming out that have low mintage, and what coins are rare vs coins that aren't rare? There is just so much information to digest I haven't hacked it yet.

Theyres no real way to tell what's going to be worth more in the future. Mintage isn't everything. Some of it is the quality that survives and other is demand. The buffalo commemorative is by no means rare but commands a high premium because everyone including non commemorative collectors want one. Even with the valuable coins they'll be ups and downs where prices will have highs and lows. The economy will play a factor too for how much people have to spend on collectables. Theyres just to many things that go into it.

At the very least though you'll at least have the silver value even if the coins don't bring a premium. If you like them keep getting them. If you are just hoping to make money they're better investments out there or cheaper bullion you can get.

I think the safest way to collect these is by not paying a premium over spot.

So far I have the entire series through last year. I have laid off buying the 2012 coins only because I felt that the price at the time was to far over the price of silver. However, the more I looked at the normal size quarters the more I liked them.

I feel that if I continue to purchase the 5 ounce coins I will run into a storage problem. This doesn't even address the question of what it will cost me if I stay the course and get the entire series. I have a feeling that by the time the final five ounce coins are minted in is going to be very costly, and the entire series will have cost a small fortune.

I feel that the 2012 coins so far the best looking coins of the series, so I am going to order mine soon. I hope that the mint will not run out of coins before I get mine.

Ive got the first 5 and Washington state (cause I live here) I dont make en effort to pick them up, but when I find the Collector version for spot + ASE premium. I snag it.

I got the Washington collector version for Spot+$5 /ozt.

Couldn't resist.

I really enjoy the designs in this series, and these coins really capture the design in a gorgeous way. Still say they should have marked them at $5 face, instead of $0.25.

At 205 a coin the whole series will be over 10k

They probably won't be $205 much longer either

I bought couple when the silver was cheaper. Liked the design but did not buy more. There are a lot of other coins which I liked and could get at cheaper price.
