So... I'm now to the point where I'm buying some of the newer mint sets to fill some holes and to get some of the satin finish coins. I'm in somewhat of a quandary concerning the Presidential dollars. I'm not a huge fan of the new dollar coins (or the Sacagewea) mainly because of the composition. These coins seem to really start to look awful after a very short amount of time, even with minimal exposure/handling. That being said, I'd rather keep them than just spend them. Has anyone had any luck keeping them in a Dansco without the awful toning that these seem susceptible to?

I collect one of each variety. I keep them in 2X2's and haven't had problems with toning.

They seem to pick up scuffs, odd spotting, small discolored patches quite easily, particularly noticeable in proof than do the silver or cupronickel coins do. I use direct fit Air-Tites for the best looking coins and 2x2 the rest.

I've had a Dansco Presidential dollars album for the last three years, filled with a mix of business-strikes and satin finish coins. Haven't had any significant toning issues, except for a John Q. Adams that I probably pulled from a mixed roll.

I've been keeping Sac/Prez dollars in albums for several years now as well (some of the early Sacs in a Whitman folder at first, but now all are in Danscos). I've had some toning on the ones I pulled in out of the wild, but most of them came from mint sets or proof sets and they seem to be holding up fine.

I've got the Presidential dollar Dansco that holds P/D/S, I haven't had any toning problems. I think part of the toning issues comes from environment (e.g, heat humidity etc) and where you store them.

I have all of the Presidential Proofs that have come out so far in a really nice Whitman album. Mine is a "date set" type, so one beautiful Proof coin for each President fits this perfectly ! I've had zero toning in this album so far. I also have all of the Sacagawea's/Native Dollars in a Dansco complete/up to date. This one has the original biz. strikes and Proofs. And then the Satin Finish ones and Proofs. There is zero toning in these, so far, for me as well. Now I do some "coin folders" for the Prez. dollars too. One for the daughter, Nephew, and an extra one for just whatever. Some of these have had small amounts of toning.....but I believe they had this before it went into the folder anyway, and "value" or "beauty" were not/are not factors that I employ while putting together "folders". It's just a "for fun" ---kids thing kinda deal. I fully expect future toning with these.....but since they'll never be worth anything but a dollar anyway.....what's it matter ? I recommend "Dansco" (or Whitman, or whatever) albums, only if you're going to put Presidential Proofs and high grade--busted right from the U.S. Mints annual Uncirc. Sets--, MS Presidential dollars in there. If you're only going to put "BU bank roll" ones in there....I just wouldn't spend the money for a Dansco album for "just that". Gotta make it worthwhile, IMO. With any other kind of coin, a Dansco would be recommended regardless of existing grade, to protect your coins, but with the Prez. dollars........well.....yeah.....they're just not ever gonna be the Rock Stars of the Coin World, if you know what I mean ! ..... So, just BU ones from "the wild"....I wouldn't do a Dansco...... but Proofs and coins taken from the annual Uncirculated U.S. Mint sets....... YES ! .... ABSOLUTELY !

I have still not purchased a Presidential dollar Dansco. I cannot decide if I want to collect P/D/S or just get a date only album to fill with the ones from my proof sets. The few I have found from circulation do not look too good. If I go with a proof only album, I will probably wait until the series is over and fill it all at once.

Thanks for the feedback, all. I'll probably go ahead and get a Dansco for them. If nothing else, maybe it will be the start of my nephew's collection in 4 or 5 years.

In another post called My Lincoln Set a member called coppercoins also pointed out that problem with Dansco Albums. Appears others too have had that problem. You may want to consider chanaging to a Whitman, Harris, US Mint, Littleton or one of the many other Albums on the market. It is possible that some Dansco Albums effect certain coins but unless a large quantity of people mention this, it may well be yours or where you keep them. Invironment means a lot in the care of coins. NO Album is air tight and if yours are in an area that has excessive moisture, it would make little difference what manufacturer of an Album is used. Consider placing yours in Zip Lock Plastic Bags. I have well over 100 Albums and all are in those Zip Lock Bags and no problem with any coins at all.

Carl, that's a good idea. Really the only experience I've had with the modern dollar coins are those that have been in circulation. My sister had a good laugh by paying me back a $500 loan with Sacageweas about 8 years ago. I really didn't mind as I had a good time spending them, but just sitting there on my desk I could almost watch the toning from day to day. Of course, they weren't in any type of preservation environment.
I guess at some point I'm going to have to look at a safety deposit box to store my long term collection. We don't have the type of humidity that many parts of the country deal with here in Tulsa, but we do have some.

I use Dansco for most of my collections. Some have been exposed to the extremes of Maines winters, New England coastal wetness and Philadelphia humidity. And I smoke. But hey seem to have survived (in old bank boxes stored in a den closet). Environmental issues are important, but sealing the set (as with baggies) appears to be logical.

I agree. I have had no problems with Dansco albums when stored in zip-lock freezer bags with desiccant added.

I too use Dansco albums. Living in Florida, we have a lot of humidity. So far I have had no problem with any of my pres. dollars toning. Like others all of mine come from mint and proof sets. I have a "P and D" album, for satin/BU and a date set album for my proofs. I do like the Dansco's for these, because they put information pages between each coin page. Here is a example EDIT ... I did not see this was a old thread until after I posted .... I wonder if OKsooner ever got t a album?
