In my opinion, the Flying Eagle cent is the most beautiful design, of all U.S. Coinage to date, and my favorite.
I recently bought this coin, as my new pocket piece.
This coin was heavily cleaned, and has scratches, so therefore, a perfect candidate.
My previous pocket piece was a Merc. I have to go with copper

At one time, was that a 1858 FEC?

EDIT - I guessed correctly before you changed the title

I guess you can say, I felt sorry for this coin. I deemed it better in my pocket, as a true appreciator of the FEC series.

It still is but by the time Dave's done with it, it will probably be dateless

One of the first coins I ever bought was an 1858 FEC. It was about in XF condition, but was pretty cruddy looking. So what did I do? I polished the crap out of it to return it to it's glory days... I didn't know any better at the time. Seeing this one has made me decide to use that one as my pocket piece. Thanks!

Very nice!

I look forward to seeing this one again in the (not too distant) future, after she has has a change to recover from the damage.

It is my favorite penny design. Wish it had run longer than three years. And it makes me want to cry seeing those obviously purposeful gouges. I would likely take the poor thing in as well.

I had to look this up to make sure, Green Mountain Boy!
In 1856, James B. Longacre designed this Cent.
However,in 1838 Christian Gobrecht designed a silver dollar which looks very much like that eagle.
